History on the Mantelpiece

We know Wigan folk have a lot of fascinating objects in their homes!
Little Book
Steven Roughley from Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust displays a rare miniature Bible from the archives. Titled A Concise History of the Old and New Testaments, it dates from 1780. These were often described as 'Thumb Bibles'.

And now you have the chance show them off to the rest of the borough in a unique exhibition.

Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust are urging people to ‘bring out the antique in your attic’ and the ‘history on your mantelpiece’ to celebrate the borough’s past.

Your Story Our History is an exciting new exhibition planned for the Turnpike Gallery, Leigh, in September, when members of the public can exhibit an inspiring historical object that is important to them.

These will be exhibited alongside items from the borough’s heritage collection and antique books from Leigh Library. It’s being organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust who manage arts, heritage and library services on behalf of Wigan Council.

Organiser Taryn Pearson is head of lifelong learning and information for the trust.

She said: “Whether it’s an old original painting or a seat from Central Park, a miner’s lamp or a rare book, you can exhibit it.”

Anyone wishing to exhibit their objects can hand them in on Saturday 5th September or Monday 7th to Wednesday 9th September between 10am and 6pm, along with a description and a few words on why they are so important to you.

Your Story Our History runs at the Turnpike Gallery, Leigh from 12th September to 26th September. Further details from the Turnpike Gallery or Leigh Library tel 01942 404469.
