The Liverpool-born writer who has created a string of acclaimed TV dramas including Cracker, The Lakes, Sunday and The Street will be interviewed by Julian Jordon and audience members as part of the Words ’09 festival.
His appearance marks the final piece in the jigsaw for this year’s stunning line up of literary talent with three of the best scriptwriters in the country visiting the borough.
Organiser Gillian Forrester says: “Each year the Words committee have tried to bring new ideas and artists to the festival alongside the events we do with our own local poets and writers.
“This year we have three of the best scriptwriters in the business – David Nobbs, Frank Cottrell Boyce and Jimmy McGovern.
“There is a real buzz about this year – it’s going to be a fantastic festival.”
Jimmy McGovern will be at Ashton Library on Saturday 18 April where he’ll take part in a question and answer session.
Gillian adds: “For all his success, Jimmy is a champion of new writers, always willing to pass on his experience to others. This is a unique opportunity to learn from one of the best in the business.”
Reggie Perrin creator David Nobbs will appear at the Atrium, Wigan Town Hall on Friday April 17 at 7.30pm.
A total of 32 literary events will run at venues across Wigan borough from April 13 until May 1. Other notable highlights include archaeologist and author of Myths and Legends, Mark Olly, storyteller and musician Ben Haggarty and award-winning poet Wendy Cope, who has been described as a ‘jet-age Tennyson’.
Her notable poetry collections include Making Cocoa for Kingsley Amis and Serious Concerns.
Words ’09 is organised by Leigh and Wigan Words Together Management Committee, a dedicated volunteer group which work in partnership with Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust to ensure its success.
