Free Swimming

In 2006, Wigan became the first borough in England to offer free swimming to under 16s. A year later, the deal was extended to include the borough’s over 60s. And now... EVERYBODY can swim for free!

It's fun, it's free! ITS COOL AT THE POOL... The McDermotts take the plunge at the new Leigh Indoor Sports Centre.

The plan is to give everybody the chance to adopt healthier lifestyles – and have some fun too.

Already, free swimming for under 16s has seen a 40 per cent increase in take-up; for the over 60s, 20 per cent.

If that kind of success is repeated from April 1 across all age groups, the council, health and leisure chiefs who are backing the scheme expect to see real improvements in well-being and life expectancy across the borough.

Chair of NHS Ashton, Leigh and Wigan Alan Stephenson added: “Getting more people active is a key priority for us, so we’re delighted to play a key role in the expansion of the swimming, enabling everyone in the borough to swim for free.”

“Free swimming for under 16s and over 60s has been incredibly successful,” said Council Leader Peter Smith.

“Swimming is one of the best forms of exercise and now everyone will be able to take the plunge towards a healthier lifestyle.”

The new deal means families across the generations can now enjoy a swim together – just like the McDermotts.

Barbara, 48, Dorothy, 72 and Bethan, 16, have been swimming at Leigh Indoor Sports Centre since it opened last year.

“Free swimming is a brilliant idea” said Barbara. “We can all swim as a family, improve our fitness and have fun at the same time.”
