Carley, a star of the popular Channel 4 series Hollyoaks, is the face of the local advertising campaign Arm Against Cervical Cancer 2009.
In the Borough, around seven women every year die of cervical cancer and the campaign is urging parents to make sure their daughters receive all three injections in the series to make sure they are protected.
Preparations are underway to give the final HPV immunisation. Schoolgirls in year eight, aged 12 and 13, will be called to receive their third and final jab week commencing April 21.
Carly Stenson said: “Sadly, cervical cancer kills three women a day in England and it is the second most common cancer in women under the age of 35.
“The Arm Against Cervical Cancer campaign will hopefully encourage all year eight girls to be immunised with all three HPV jabs needed to help protect them from the cancer later on in life.”
At the end of May Carley will pick three lucky girls who will win a VIP makeover and photoshoot with the star, and the chance to be next year’s campaign figurehead.
Girls can find out more about the competition from their school nurse or by texting CARLEY to 82540.
Just by texting this number, girls will also be given a reminder text message ahead of their final HPV jab due at the end of April.
Gill Marsh, Immunisation Co-ordinator at NHS Ashton, Leigh and Wigan said: “This initiative will dramatically reduce the occurrence of cervical cancer in the borough and we are confident it complements our existing comprehensive screening service.
“We would strongly encourage all parents and guardians to give consent for the final round of the vaccine in April, to ensure their daughters are protected.”
