When it comes to the latest must-have kit, Wigan Council is leading the way thanks to a unique striking partnership.

But this is no football strip; it’s a vision in bright yellow that will mean children will be able to travel home from school in safety and style. The council’s road safety team has joined forced with Wigan Athletic boss Dave Whelan on a project that will see more than 5,000 hi-visibility waistcoats sent to schools across the borough.

And in a move unique to the council, the bright yellow waistcoats are set to become an official school uniform requirement, at a cost of less than £1.50. Vizwear, owned by Dave Whelan, is providing the clothing at reduced cost.

Cllr David Molyneux, Wigan Council’s Cabinet Champion for the Environment, says: “We want to see all children wearing them on the way to and from schools, and as parents, I’m certain we all want to ensure our children are safe on the streets.”
