It's a little known fact that Leigh boasts the oldest amateur dramatic society in the UK – and possibly one of the oldest in the world.

St Joseph's Players, formed in 1850, gave their first recorded performance in 1856 at the old town hall on King Street, although for the past 80 years its base has been St Joseph's Hall in Chapel Street.

Today the society is still going strong and is currently rehearsing its eagerly awaited annual panto.

This year it's Robinson Crusoe, produced by Doreen Johnson. The show will run from 21 January to 31 January starting at 7-15pm and there will also be three matinée performances - at 2pm on Saturday 24, Sunday 25 and Saturday 31 January.

St Joseph's publicity officer Pauline Dowsett says: “We perform several plays throughout the year and our traditional pantomime at the beginning of each year is immensely popular with all ages.”

Many former St Joseph’s players have gone on to high achievement in the arts, including Peter Eckersley, former Granada head of drama and Coronation Street producer, Joseph Shovelton of the D’Oyly Carte Opera Company and Doctors and Scallywagga actress Jessica Hall from Hindley.

Ticket prices for Robinson Crusoe are £6 adults, £4 for 16s and under. Concessions: first two nights Wed and Thur, two for one. Tickets are available from Bang Bang, Bradshawgate, Leigh, or email p.galloway@care4free.net
