Wigan Council’s Borough in Bloom scheme has received a resounding vote of approval from residents and visitors. In a survey on the streets of Ashton, Leigh and Wigan, eight out of ten quizzed said that investment in flowers and planters made their visit to the town centre more enjoyable and the vast majority said they were satisfied with the displays overall.

Alley gates installed by the council have led to a big drop in burglary and antisocial behaviour, a new report reveals. Residents say they feel safer while litter and dog fouling have also been cut, according to the report to the council’s community protection panel. 669 gates have been installed so far in 272 sites across the borough….with more to follow.

Council consumer watchdogs are warning residents to be on their guard against a gang of unscrupulous workers who are charging elderly and vulnerable people top dollar for rock bottom work. An 83 year-old Lowton woman has already shelled out more than £300 for sub-standard repair work to her drive, while neighbours in Whelley have also been stung to the tune of hundreds of pounds for shoddy block paving.
