Christmas is coming, and across the borough the council has been working hard to make sure our towns are full of seasonal cheer.
From Standish to Ashton, Golborne to Atherton, there’s plenty going on for young and old alike.
Christmas trees and lights have been provided from your councillors’ Brighter Borough funds with support from local businesses.
Here’s a flavour of what’s happening. (The lights went on in Wigan and Leigh before Borough Life was published).
Ashton: 7pm on Friday November 28 at Ashton Library will see the switch on of the Christmas tree decorations. Trinity Girls band will be playing carols from 6.30pm onwards and the event will end with light refreshments. The best dressed window competition will again be taking place. On Christmas Eve from 3.45pm a procession will re-enact the journey to Bethlehem. It leaves from Hilton Street car park and concludes at St. Thomas’ Church.
Atherton: Large crowds are expected for Atherton’s splendid nativity parade – complete with real donkeys – which starts at 6pm on Friday 12 December.
The Nativity story will be told as the parade weaves round the town centre. The parade will end in the church where the final scene will be acted out followed by for thanks and prayers, and refreshments in the church hall.
Bryn: Lights switch on 6pm, Saturday 29 November, at the corner of Old Rd and Wigan Rd. Hotpot, mince pies, hot drinks and some free gifts for the children. Also a Victorian day on Saturday 13 December courtesy of Bryn traders - a steam traction engine and Victorian organ will be on display plus hot chestnuts for shoppers.
Golborne: Christmas tree lights will be switched on Thursday November 27 November at 6pm on Peter Kane Square. Carol singing followed by refreshments at Heath Street Methodist Church. Christmas Fayre on Saturday December 6 at Golborne Primary School in Talbot Street. 11am till 3pm including face painting, bouncy castle and Santa’s grotto.
Pemberton: Christmas switch on November 27th at Chapel Street car park. Starts at 3.30pm and will feature Santa's grotto. Carols performed by St John’s school.
Platt Bridge: Platt Bridge Christmas Party is at the Community First school on 29 November from 12noon until 4pm. Children’s entertainer, games and a visit from Father Christmas.
Tyldesley: Friday November 28 at 6pm - switch on of the Christmas tree lights on Market Square. Starts 1.30 pm with music from Friskyjazz trio. Award winning entertainer Barrington will perform from 3.30pm to 5.30pm and Father Christmas will make an appearance from 4pm.
Lights will be switched on by Mike Toolan and Chelsea from Key 103. Schools will visit care homes around the town centre to sing carols accompanied by Fred Longworth band.
