It's a sign of the times

Olivia receives her prize from council road safety manager Julie Dagnall

It's not every day you get to create your own official signpost. But nine year old Olivia Guest has done just that after winning a council competition.

Road safety officers visited Parklee Primary School in Atherton, which is close to busy Hamilton Street near the town centre. They organised a competition for the children to create an eye catching design reminding drivers that they don’t need to go any faster than 20 mph in the area.

“The roads round school are very busy,” says Olivia. “My sign tells everyone to slow down.”

The signs have now been put up and form part of a wider road safety strategy for the area. And, thanks to Olivia, the message is clear to all road users – there’s no need to go racing down Hamilton Street.

The work in Atherton is part of a borough-wide road safety programme to cut accidents. Council environment champion Cllr David Molyneux said: “We want to see 20 mph speed limits around most if not all schools as soon as possible.”

Free Summer holiday cycling courses

These are being held across the borough for children aged 10 and over. Full details are available from the council’s road safety team on 01942 488250, or you can check the council’s website. Places are limited, so hurry!
