Ditch the disposables advice makes nappy happy parents

Nappy happy: Louise Hill with baby Jonathan and Abigail

Council recycling chiefs are urging parents to “ditch the disposables and reach for the real ones” in a bid to cut the three billion disposable nappies Britain sends to landfill every year.

Waste recycling officer Nick Deakin says: “We’re sending eight million nappies a day to landfill – a real stinker! And if you throw one away today, it will still be there in 2208.”

Seven million trees are felled each year to keep Britain in disposable nappies – that’s four and a half trees per child. Adds Nick: “People still remember the old style cotton nappies with a massive pin at the front. But today’s real nappies just look the same as disposable nappies and they are very easy to use - not a pin in sight!”

Leigh mum Louise Hill is one of thousands of parents who’ve made the choice to go green. “It’s a real money saver for me,” she says. “Abigail, who’s now four, was in real nappies – she was potty trained by two - much earlier than average, and she even walked sooner then expected.”

And now Louise’s nine month old son Jonathan is in real nappies, and looking happy and comfortable for it. Louise adds: “I feel I’m achieving something, and with the support of the whole family, we are making a difference.”

Many local real nappy firms offer a laundering service. By contacting the council, you could get your first month completely free. Ring Nick Deakin for details on 01942 404392.
