New faces join council decision-making cabinet

There's a new look to Wigan Council’s top policy making executive, with two councillors joining the ruling cabinet for the first time.

Cllr Susan Loudon

Cllr Paul Prescott

Atherton councillor Susan Loudon will take charge of the Children and Young People's portfolio previously held by Brian Wilson, who was defeated at the recent local elections. The other newcomer is Pemberton councillor Paul Prescott, who takes responsibility for organisational change, including finance and human resources.

There’s a return to top office for Aspull member John Hilton who will chair the planning committee in place of John O'Neill, who has retired after 18 years.

In other changes, Ince’s David Molyneux becomes deputy leader of the council – a post previously held by John O’Neill. He retains his environment portfolio and also takes charge of regeneration.

Leigh councillors Keith Cunliffe and Kevin Anderson swap roles, Cllr Anderson becoming champion for neighbourhood services, including community safety, while Cllr Cunliffe will look after the healthy communities and older people portfolio.

Worsley Mesnes member Brian Baldwin keeps his role as champion for leisure and culture, while Aspull's Chris Ready takes on the job of improvement champion, looking after customer service and communications.

Wigan West councillor Cllr Terry Halliwell will become equality champion and the cabinet’s link with Wigan and Leigh Housing.

Council Leader Peter Smith will chair the cabinet and be responsible for strategy, the budget, partnership working and external relations.
