Art of gold still beating

Local youngsters had ‘art beats’ racing at the borough’s annual Youth Arts Challenge Showcase. 11 youth groups staged a pulsating night of dance, music, drama, film and photography at the Wigan Investment Centre.

The Youth Arts Challenge scheme provides grants up to £1,000 to support projects involving local young people between the ages of 11 and 25. This year’s showcase included a play about the lives of children who care for an adult, a street dance routine around the issue of gang culture and a film by young residents from Butts Bridge about the problems they face in their community.

Vicky Fletcher, Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust Arts Development Officer, said: “The Youth Arts Challenge is a fantastic scheme that gives hundreds of local young people the opportunity to express themselves through the arts every year.

“This year’s showcase was really inspiring. I’d like to thank all the young people and youth workers involved for their efforts.”

Youth groups can now apply for 2008/09 Youth Arts Challenge grants. Contact Vicky on 01942 486918 or email: v.fletcher@wlct.org for further details.
