56 Honorary Alderman Mr George Davies: It was moved by Councillor J Hilton and seconded by Councillor C Ready that the title of Honorary Alderman of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan be conferred on Mr George Davies.

George Davies was first elected to Aspull/Standish Ward of Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council in 1987. He served on the Education, Establishment, Highways and Works, Housing, Policy and Resources, Public Protection, Recreation and Amenities and Social Services Committees, together with Best Value, Cultural Services, Environment, Housing, Performance and Regeneration Panels. He was a special interest Member for Street Scene. He lost his seat in 1995 and returned in 1999 representing the Aspull/Standish Ward and again lost his seat in 2003 and returned in 2004 and represented the newly formed Standish with Langtree Ward. Mr Davies was a school governor at St Wilfred’s Church of England Primary and St Marie’s Catholic Primary Schools, Standish and he has supported several Mayoral charity campaigns. Mr Davies represented the Council on a number of outside organisations, including the Greater Manchester Waste Disposal Authority from 2004 to 2008, Douglas Valley Joint Committee (now disestablished), Road Safety Forum, Waste Management Working Group and Wigan Local Transport Group (now disestablished). He has given valuable service to the Council and to the community at large.

Resolved: This Council records the eminent services rendered to the Council by George Davies, a distinguished past Member of the Council.

The title of Honorary Alderman of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan is accordingly conferred on George Davies.

Mr Davies expressed his sincere thanks to the Council for the honour now bestowed upon him.
