44  Honorary Alderman Mrs Audrey Bennett: It was moved by Councillor Mrs E Smethurst and seconded by Councillor Mrs S Loudon that the title of Honorary Alderman of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan be conferred on Audrey Bennett.

Mrs Audrey Bennett was first elected to Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council in 1977, representing the Abram Ward. In May 1989, she made history and was installed as the first Lady Mayor for Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council after being Deputy Mayor during the previous year. Her Mayoral Charity for the year was to support the multiple handicapped in Leigh and Wigan. During her time, she has served on most Committees in an ex officio capacity as Mayor, but she was a long standing member on the Highways and Works and Planning and Development Committees later (Development Control) and became Vice Chairman of the Planning Committee. She was a school governor at Platt Bridge Community Primary, Abram Bryn Gates Primary and Low Hall County Primary Schools. Mrs Bennett has represented the Council on a number of outside organisations including the Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Authority, Asylum Seekers Provider Forum, Douglas Valley Joint Committee (now disestablished) and Platt Bridge Community Centre. She has given valuable service to the Council and to the community at large.

Resolved:  This Council records the eminent services rendered to the Council by Audrey Bennett, a distinguished past Member of the Council.

The title of Honorary Alderman of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan is accordingly conferred on Audrey Bennett.

Mrs Bennett expressed sincere thanks to the Council for the honour now bestowed upon her.

45  Honorary Alderman Alfred Robinson: I t was moved by Councillor D T Molyneux and seconded by Councillor J B Baldwin that the title of Honorary Alderman of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan be conferred on Alfred Robinson.

Alfred Robinson was a Member of the former Hindley Urban District Council and was first elected to Wigan Metropolitan Borough Council in 1974, representing the Hindley Ward. He served on the Audit, Establishment, Finance, Finance and Human Resources, Highways and Works, Licensing, Planning and Development later (Development Control), Public Protection, Recreation and Amenities and Regulation Committees. He became Vice Chairman of the Recreation and Amenities Committee in 1986. He was a school governor at St Peter’s CE Primary School, Hindley; and has represented the Council on a number of outside organisations including Frances Duckenfield Charity, James Charlton Eckersley Charity, Mather Eleemosynary Charity, Douglas Valley Joint Committee (now disestablished), National Association of British Market Authorities and North West Sound Archive. He has given valuable service to the Council and to the community at large.

Resolved:  This Council records the eminent services rendered to the Council by Alfred Robinson, a distinguished past Member of the Council.

The title of Honorary Alderman of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan is accordingly conferred on Alfred Robinson.
