80 Honorary Freedom of the Borough – The Royal Mercian and Lancastrian Yeomanry: Further to Minute 70, it was moved by Councillor Mrs E Smethurst and seconded by Councillor P R C Smith and

Resolved: This Council hereby confers upon The Royal Mercian and Lancastrian Yeomanry (the Territorial Army Reserve Unit based in Wigan) the Honorary Freedom of the Metropolitan Borough of Wigan pursuant to the provisions of Section 249 of the Local Government Act 1972, that being the highest honour which the Council has the power to bestow.

The Mayor presented a scroll of Honour to Lieutenant Colonel J G Brooking RDG, the Commanding Officer of The Royal Mercian and Lancastrian Yeomanry, together with a gift of an inscribed rose bowl. Lieutenant Colonel Brooking, in accepting the scroll of Honour, offered the gift of a sword to the Council and then thanked the Council for bestowing this prestigious honour.
