Council notice of motions

In local government language, a 'motion' is the term used for a discussion or a debate at a Council meeting of any particular issue.

Any one of Wigan's 75 Councillors can ask for an issue that either affects Wigan Borough or falls under the Council's responsibility to be discussed at a Council meeting.  Whan this happens, the procedure is called a 'notice of motion' and is covered by the Council's constitution.

The Wigan Council Constitution is divided into 16 articles and sets out how the Council operates, makes decisions and the procedures that need to be followed to ensure that these are efficient, transparent and accountable to local people.  Part 4 of the constitution relates to rules of procedure and covers how notices of motions should be dealt with at Council.

This part of the website sets out all of the notices of motions that have been submitted for consideration at Council meetings since January 2005.  Physical copies of all the motions that are submitted for discussion are alos available on deposit at the Town Hall, Wigan.  members of the public are more than welcome to visit and ask to to see this public document.
