Independent Visitors, or their partners, cannot work for Wigan Council. This ensures the role is completely independent, with no conflict of interest.
Some young people who live in children's homes or foster homes don't have regular visits from an adult who is 'special' to them. Independent visitors therefore:
- see them regularly
- make sure their views are acted upon
- get involved in activities and outings and take an interest in their life.
There is no age restriction for becoming an independent visitor, and no formal qualifications are needed. You do, however, need:
- experience of spending time with children and young people
- to have a genuine interest in helping young people fulfil their potential
- to be able to talk with children and young people and develop good relationships
- patience and understanding.
Independent visitors are carefully matched with a child or young person. Things taken into account are personality, age, gender, interest, location, experience, and the wishes and feelings of the child or young person.

You will receive induction training, as well as on-going support throughout your contact with the child or young person.
Checks on your background will be made with the Criminal Records Bureau (external link).
