What is a JSNA
The Local Government and Public Involvement in Health Act (2007) places a duty on all Local Authorities and Primary Care Trusts (PCTs) to undertake a Joint Strategic Needs Assessment (JSNA). The JSNA is expected to describe the curernt and future health, care and well-being needs of the people within the borough.
The Process
The process needed to produce the JSNA will involve a systematic approach to gathering information about the current and future health, care and well-being needs of the Borough’s population. Some of the information gathered will be statistical, some of it will be the views of the public and service users.
The JSNA will be an ongoing process and in order to gather information, a live web based model is available to view the latest JSNA. The system used to develop the model is called WISDOM (External Link), which stands for Wigan Information System of Dynamic Online Maps. This model will then enable us to carry out analysis on a regular basis which will highlight the main issues emerging within the borough and will form the basis for final JSNA reports.
What Will the JSNA be Used For?
Information gathered will be used to identify potental gaps in future service provision. For example, one of the key challenges in the future will be the ageing population meaning that we will have increased numbers of older people. It may be that the JSNA highlights the need for more housing which is suited to the needs of older people. The JSNA will therefore provide evidence which will inform the future planning and commissioning of services both in the short term(three to five years time) and in the longer term (five to ten years time).
JSNA 2011
The 2011 Joint Strategic Needs Assessment was completed in June, and is made up of nine thematic chapters considering some of Wigan's most pressing issues. Input has been provided from a range of partnerships and attempts to provide a more holistic approach to considering health and wellbeing in the Borough.
Below you will find links to the different chapters of the report. All of the chapters, along with the linked documents that are referenced within them, can also be found by accessing the JSNA Resources section of WISDOM(External Link)
