“Sustainable development means thinking about the wider issues, the present and future consequences of what we do. It is about looking after the planet and making sure that solutions go on working”.Over the next 5 years, we need wider understanding of sustainability and the impact of development on the community.We need to recognise and reward good practice and to learn from other Boroughs and countries. This means more networking opportunities,community-led waste recycling.

Current programmes
- HMP Hindley - accredited to deliver the NVQ in Waste Management Operations
- Beech Hill Primary School - high quality work - with initiatives such as ‘Earth Keepers’ and ‘Global Footprints’
- Cycling Strategy for Wigan - launched in 2002 by Council, uniting cycling communities, employers, developers and transport providers
- Waste Management and minimisation -100+ kerbside collection points located in car parks, near pubs, libraries and shops
- Household waste recycling centres developed and improved
- Fortnightly doorstep collection of waste paper and magazines now available to over 99% of all residents
- Major greening programmes such as Brighter Borough Initiative, 'corridor' schemes, Cleaner Greener,People and Places
- Non-Active Open Spaces - Marsh Green Community Park - involving Atherton Environmental Projects and Clear-Glaze Partnership
