We need to improve the Borough's transport infrastructure, to reduce the rate of growth of car journeys, to increase the use of alternative transport and to reduce accidents.
At present
- Our internal road network is under developed, causing travel problems for local people and businesses alike.
- Lack of funding has prevented the work necessary to tackle the problems.
- At the same time, car ownership is growing faster than elsewhere in Greater Manchester.
- Use of public transport has been declining.
- Very few people walk or cycle to work.
We recognise the links between non-active lifestyles, congestion and poor health.
Progress so far
Improvements have been made in a number of schemes:
- Car parking management.
- Cycling and walking plans.
- Quality bus corridors.
- Healthy Living Programme.
Actions
- Lobby for investment in local transport infrastructure such as Wigan Transport hub, Wigan Inner Ring Road (West), Leigh Guided Bus-way, Route A5225
- Improve rail network.
- Car share programmes.
- Encourage people to work from home.
- Use planning rules to reduce car use.
- More late night buses.
- Real time information and ticket improvements.
Our targets
- Increase percentage of residents who feel it is quicker to move around the borough than previously.
- Reduce annual average traffic flow per 1000km of principal roads.
- Decrease percentage of residents who would use their car as their first choice when taking a journey.
- Reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured in road traffic accidents.
Visit the "Measuring performance" page for the full list of targets.
How you could contribute
- If you go to work - then leave the car at home one day a week.
- Use public transport when you can - especially when roads are busy.
- Join a car sharing scheme.
