Our Approach
Wigan adopts a strong stance in order to maintain a relaxed and law abiding environment on it’s streets. Alcohol bans, street closures, plastic drinking glasses and high visibility policing are just some of the measures which the Council, Police and partners have taken to reduce alcohol related public disorder.
The alcohol bans have been in effect in the Town Centre’s of Wigan and Leigh since 2002 and have now been extended to cover Town Centre’s of areas such as Swinley, Golborne, Tyldesley, Ashton in Makerfield and Hindley.

The Alcohol bans allow the Police to exercise extra powers to seize or dispose of bottles, cans, glasses and to arrest those who continue to drink in the streets or who refuse to hand over such containers, within the designated areas.
Maintaining Public Order relies on effective partnership working between Council services and Greater Manchester Police. The Police help to maintain night time economy’s across the borough and ensure that protective measures such as alcohol bans are adhered to.
Supporting High Profile Events
Wigan Council provide strong support to the Football and Rugby clubs in our Borough. Careful risk assessments are conducted before any sporting or social event takes place within the Borough.
Measures are put in place to effectively manage influxes in Traffic, control opposition supporters and ensure a good time is had by all.
Managing our Night time economy
Wigan council strives to deliver both safer drinking messages and enforcement aimed at those people intent on causing disorder in our town centres at night.
Working with local Licensees, Wigan CDRP maintain safer streets by:
- Additional police in our town centres over weekends taking a zero-tolerance stance against night-time disorder.
- Pedestrianisation of town centre areas which are frequented by residents in the evening, ensuring that town centres across the borough remain safe and easy to Police.
- Periodical reviews of weekend CCTV footage with staff from Wigan Council and the Police. Footage can be used as evidence when taking out Exclusion Orders and other Civil action banning those people from our town centres engaging in violence and disorder, even if they were not arrested at the time of the offence .
Our Aim
We will continue to take such measures to keep public order offences at a low across the borough. The provision of a safer Wigan is an ongoing process which is constantly under review. Day and night, our aim is to ensure that all residents in the Borough can enjoy their chosen activity without fear of disruption or harm.
