Home Safety Advice

Please also refer to Page 937 Home Security Assessment Protecting yourself and protecting your property is common sense- and there are lots of things you can do to ensure you remain safe.

Personal Safety

If you are alone and out at night take sensible precautions. Consider carrying a personal alarm to alert others, travel safely. Walk in well lit areas where possible.

Town Centres

If you are out for a night on the town take the obvious steps.
• Stay in reasonable sized groups
• Keep to well lit streets
• Avoid deserted areas
• Take a late night bus service rather than walk home
• Most of all drink sensibly. Over the top drunkenness is the trigger for a high volume of violence and damage related offences.

Domestic Violence

Violence in the home is often disguised from what it really is- a straight forward crime. It is always inexcusable, do not suffer in silence. It is unlikely to improve if you let it go on unnoticed.

If you are suffering Domestic Violence please report it and get the help and support you deserve.

Home Security (refer to page 937 Home Security Assessment)

Avoid your home being targeted by burglars by installing sensible security measures on you house. This includes: good quality door locks; window locks and an intruder alarm system. There’s a full list (on page 937) detailing what measures you can take.
It is also advisable to be in a Homewatch scheme, join your local scheme or start your own with your neighbours.

Vehicle Security

Always lock your vehicle, use a visible steering lock if possible. Never leave valuables on display, remove any items such as car radios and satellite navigation systems (including cradle). Park off the street where possible and in as well a lit area as possible.
