Wigan Children’s Fund was granted funding for three years starting in April 2003. Bids for funding were invited from local community and voluntary groups, partnerships and statutory agencies and 34 projects were successful in receiving funding. Funding for most of those projects ended by March 2006 but 86% of them have been sustained, either by being mainstreamed by the Council, by using resources provided by the Children’s Fund, or by funding obtained from elsewhere, or by volunteers.
In 2004, Wigan Children’s Fund was given the opportunity to apply for further funding from 2005 to 2008. This would incorporate the final year of the original allocation and an additional two years’ funding. The remit was to aid the smooth transition into children’s trusts (in Wigan’s case – Children & Young People’s Services). The additional funding was agreed and new projects were commissioned.
