Only baby’s born within the District of Wigan and Leigh can be registered at Wigan & Leigh Register Office. If your baby was born elsewhere please contact the Register Office local to where the baby was born.

All newborn babies must be registered within 6 weeks of the baby being born.
If the baby’s parents are married to each then either parent can attend to register the baby. If the baby’s parents are not married to each other then the mother must attend to register the baby. If she wishes to have the father’s details entered into the register then he must attend with her to register the baby.
You must make an appointment to register a baby, at Wigan Town Hall or Leigh Town Hall, by telephoning our contact centre on 01942 705000.
You will be required to give the following information at the registration:
- the date and place of birth of the child
- the Child's forename(s) and surname
- the mother's name & place of birth, current or last occupation,
- and maiden name & date of marriage, if applicable.
If you wish the father's name to be added to the register, then the father's name & place of birth and current or last occupation and date of birth will be needed.
You will receive a free short birth certificate for the baby on the day; you can also purchase a full birth certificate on the day for £3.50. (Please note we only accept cash as payment method)
