Requesting Certificates for Family History Purposes

Advice and help on researching your Family Tree can be found the Museum of Life, Library Street, Wigan

We can issue duplicate certificates for Family History purposes from 1837 to present day, for events that occurred in the district of Wigan and Leigh only.

All our indexes are available to view and search online at Lancashire BMD Website (External Link). The years covered are 1837 to 1950 for Births, Deaths and Marriages.

If you have a reference from LancashireBMD please quote it when you apply. The reference from FreeBMD is not needed and we can’t use it for any purpose.

The fee for a certificate includes a free 5 year search if you are unsure of the correct year in which the event occurred. If you wish us to search beyond 5 years there is a fee of £18.00 payable. This extended search must be booked with Wigan Register Office in advance.

£15.00 (in cash only) same day Priority service, applied for in person at Wigan Town Hall and available after 3 pm that day.

£10.00 (in cash only) non priority service applied for in person at Wigan Town Hall is available and the certificate is available 3 working days later or posted out 3 working days later.

£10.00 postal application (payable by cheque or postal order only) and the certificate is posted out 3 working days after receipt.
