Registering a Birth

Births must be registered within 6 weeks of a baby's birth. If the parents of the child are married to each other then either parent may register the birth. If the baby's parents are not married and the mother wishes to have the father's details entered in the register, he will have to attend with her. Please contact us for further information.

Before coming to the Register Office, please telephone 01942 705000 to arrange an appointment.

You will be required to give the following information at the registration:

  • the date and place of birth of the child
  • the Child's forename(s) and surname
  • the mother's name & place of birth, current or last occupation,
  • and maiden name & date of marriage, if applicable.

If you wish the father's name to be added to the register, then the father's name & place of birth and current or last occupation will be needed.

When the birth has been registered, the parent(s) will recieve a free birth certificate giving the child's name, sex, and date of birth. A full birth certificate, which gives the parents details may be purchased for £3.50.
