Weights and Measures

The oldest form of consumer protection is the accurate use of weights and measures.

Scales, petrol pumps, beer meters and weighbridges all need to be accurate to make sure that traders and their customers get a fair deal.

All weighing and measuring equipment in use for trade has to be tested and approved by a trading standards officer before it can legally be used. We regularly check the weight of goods in supermarkets, greengrocers, butchers, on a coalman's lorry, and in other retail premises, to make sure that customers get what they pay for.
