The Consumer Protection Regulations came into force in May 2008.
They replaced and expanded upon many of the provisions of the Trade Descriptions Act 1968 and other legislation. Many of the detailed rules around trade descriptions were replaced with a general ban on unfair trading.
The changes apply to second hand car dealers, as well as other traders whose business practices may affect consumers.
New provisions were added in relation to omissions.
It is now an offence not to reveal to a consumer information which may cause them to take a transactional difference they would not have taken otherwise.
