Easter Egg Competition

Easter eggs - are they value for money?

Primary Education

Each year Trading Standards services throughout Greater Manchester run an easter competition for year 4, 5 or 6 pupils, based on the concept of  "value for money".

The competition is designed to test the pupil’s skills in literacy, numeracy and science when considering the very important purchase of Easter eggs!

The competition has three main aims:

  • To contribute to project work which can be integrated with the class curriculum.
  • To improve young people’s consumer skills and awareness, and
  • To help a busy teacher introduce the concept of "citizenship" while involving the class in a fun competition.

The children are asked to compare 3 easter eggs in terms of their weight, packaging, price, contents and (of course) taste, so they may decide which is the best  "value for money".

The outcome should be a display of the children’s work on the project, and should include pictures, written descriptions, drawings or photographs etc.

Displays are judged on attractiveness of presentation, informative content, overall effort (taking into account the ages of the children involved), the balance between teacher and pupil contribution to the final entry and there are bonus marks for originality!
