Consumer Education

Wigan Trading Standards take part in organising a number of annual competitions for schools aimed at helping young consumers be more aware of their rights

Young Consumers of the Year Competition

Young Consumers of the Year competition (External link)  invites teams of four young people to compete in a knockout quiz which tests them on a range of consumer issues and helps young people to become more informed and confident consumers.  Topics covered include:

  • Consumer Affairs
  • Money and Finance
  • Food and Drink
  • Safety and the Environment
  • Europe and Travel
  • Credit

The competition, co-ordinated by the Trading Standards Institute, involves schools from across the country that rise to the annual challenge to become the nation's top young consumers.

Consumer Challenge Quiz

Consumer challenge quiz is a national competition for children at Special Schools.

It is designed to help vulnerable young people cope with consumer rights and covers subjects such as signs and symbols, safety, shoppers' rights and legal matters in a participative and interesting way.

To enter students must be in full-time education and generally aged between 14 and 17 years and/or at key stage 3/4.

Playsafe Competition

Playsafe  is a fun competition run by Trading Standards in association with the British Toy and Hobby Association.

You will need to access the Trading Standards Institute (External Link) website to enter the Playsafe competition

In this competition young people design a toy suitable for children aged 3 to 7.  They must include details about how the toy is used and explain the safety features, play and child development benefits.

Ensuring toys are safe is an important part of our work and the competition helps to highlight the features necessary for a child's toy.
