Wigan's Trading Standards service aims to promote fair, safe and honest trading in the borough, for the benefit of both consumers and local businesses. We want Wigan to be a good place to shop and relax.
To meet this aim, we work to nine service objectives:
- To disrupt traders operating in the 'informal economy'
- To prevent harm to children and nuisance caused by illegal sales of restricted products
- To prevent people becoming victims of commercial crime in their own homes
- To assist local consumers and to equip them to be more informed and confident as consumers
- To advise local businesses to help them to succeed fairly and legally
- To deal with the 'problem traders' who persistently trade unfairly
- To prevent unsafe goods from entering the market
- To ensure quality food standards and accurate labelling for local consumers
- To inspect and advise local businesses on Trading Standards legislation
The Crime & Community Team works on objectives 1-3
The Fair Trading Team works on objectives 4-6
The Standards Team works on objectives 7-9
