Future Jobs Fund

In the April 2009 budget, the £1 billion “Future Jobs Fund” (FJF) was announced by the Government with the aim of creating 150,000 new jobs nationally between October 2009 and April 2011.

The fund aims to:

  • Create additional jobs for long term unemployed people;
  • Benefit the local community (the jobs created must be of community benefit)
  • Create a significant proportion of jobs quickly.

It is intended that approximately 100,000 of the jobs created should be for young people (aged 18 to 24), with the remaining 50,000 for people living in specific unemployment black spots. To be eligible, people must have been unemployed for at least 6 months.

Future Jobs Fund in Wigan

Wigan is a partner in the £52 million Greater Manchester Future Jobs Fund Programme which will create 8,000 jobs by April 2011.

In Wigan, we are aiming to create 565 new additional jobs by the end of March 2011. The jobs last for 6 months and offer at least 35 hours of work per week. The Local Strategic Partnership in Wigan has allocated over £3.6 million of Working Neighbourhoods Funds to support the delivery of Future Jobs Fund in the borough. The additional funding will be used to improve the amount and quality of training and support and also to possibly increase the length of the job beyond the 6 month minimum.

Wigan Council is working with four key employment partners:

  • Inspire 2 Independence;
  • Groundwork;
  • Arena Housing;
  • Lancashire Wildlife Trust.

These partners will employ individuals and provide support and training as required. The Council and other public and third sector organisations actually create the jobs and the work for individuals.

Future Jobs Fund in Wigan was launched on 11 January 2010. In the first 6 months, over 200 young and long term unemployed local people have successfully started work.

All jobs created through the Future Jobs Fund are only advertised with Job Centre Plus. If you are unemployed and interested in any of the jobs created please contact your Job Centre Plus advisor.
