A multi-million pound refurbishment and pedestrianised scheme has transformed the town centre in recent years and shoppers have welcomed the improvements.
Wigan has many of the biggest names in High Street Shopping including:
Marks & Spencer, Boots, Debenhams, British Home Stores, Argos, Primark, WH Smith and Next to name just a few; and we have more major stores opening when our new Grand Arcade Shopping Centre (External link) opens in Spring 2007.
However Wigan is not just about shopping, we have a fantastic choice of bars, clubs and restaurants located in the town, leisure facilities and a host of other businesses.
Landmark Tower Planned for Wigan Town Centre
Grand Arcade developers, Modus, are now close to submitting a planning application for a mixed use landmark tower at the junction of Millgate and Riverway, Wigan. The proposed development will form the final phase of the Grand Arcade scheme and will include restaurants and cafes, office accommodation and over 150 apartments at the upper levels. The restaurant and cafes will be based around a 'public' space lit by an atrium and will aim to provide a different, more sophisticated offer than the King Street area.
Lengthy discussions are still underway with the developers and architects to achieve the main design aim of creating a striking contemporary design, using modern materials and architectural detailing. The emerging scheme has an 18 storey high part glazed tower which will offer impressive views for residents. Together with the Grand Arcade, the development will represent a massive investment and confidence boost to Wigan town centre, and will encourage investment in other sites around the centre.
