The North West Coalfield Communities Regeneration Programme (NWCCRP), funded through the North West Development Agency (NWDA), is a unique and innovative partnership-lead strategy for the regeneration of former coalfield communities.
The programme supports eight local authorities:
It was developed through the North West Coalfield Communities Campaign (NWCCC), which aims to address deprivation through promoting economic, social and environmental regeneration of former coalfield areas. It aims to narrow the gap in prosperity, and improve the well-being, of those who formerly worked in coalfield areas.
The NWCCRP has an allocation of £5 million over four years, which takes it to March 2008 and includes other public and private sector funding, which is being leveraged and invested alongside NWDA money. The programme will achieve targeted outputs such as such as increased skills, training, jobs and startup businesses. Wigan Council is the accountable body for the Programme and manages it on behalf of the Independent Board. The Board comprises of two representatives from each of the eight targeted areas representing the public, private and community sectors.
The Programme aims to deliver an integrated package of projects to assist regeneration based on five key priority themes as follows:
- Enterprising Communities: Increase the level of enterprise by supporting social enterprise development, community based business start-ups, and intermediate labour market initiatives.
- Competitive Communities: Increasing the competitiveness of deprived communities by increasing basic skills levels, and participation and achievement in learning/vocational training.
- Engaged Communities: Developing and supporting new and existing community partnerships, and creating community-focused facilities.
- Attractive Communities: Improve the attractiveness of land, building and transport gateways and corridors, enhancing the overall image perception of former mining communities and maximise opportunities to develop and increase tourism.
- Healthy Communities: Increasing health awareness and participation in healthy lifestyles.
