The Manchester Independent Economic Review (MIER) consists of a Commission of prominent economists and business leaders, supported by a Policy Advisory Group and Secretariat, with responsibility for commissioning high quality evidence-based research to inform decision-makers in Manchester.
What will the Manchester Independent Economic Review (MIER) Provide?
The Review will provide a fresh economic narrative which will both inform and raise the level of debate regarding the economic future of Greater Manchester within the economic development community.
- A shared evidence base which can be used to underpin policy choices regarding future priorities for strategic investment and to bridge some of the persistent gulfs in understanding what exists in Greater Manchester (and in other areas), about how regional economies grow.
- An accessible and updateable evidence base at a more detailed level than has previously been achieved in order to support policymakers.
- A shared view of the future development of the Greater Manchester economy including the longer-term drivers of change and factors facilitating responses to future external changes and shocks.
The MIER and Wigan
The MIER Roadshow came to Leigh Sports Village on Thursday 26 March 2009. Many thanks to those who attended. The MIER Team used the event to discuss and showcase emerging outputs from the Review, and engage with key local stakeholders. The centrepiece of the roadshow was a one hour “Main Event” (presentation and Q&A), designed to be given to a wide local audience of local authority staff, Councillors, local businesspeople and other key stakeholders in order to:
- Introduce officers and key local enterprises to the MIER, its aims, intentions and relevance to their forward planning;
- Provide the latest thinking on bringing long-term sustainable economic growth to Greater Manchester (GM);
- Provide all the information MIER (and the Commission) have generated on the District;
- Provide the latest thinking on how the economic futures envisaged by GM and by the district link;
- Map out how this process, spearheaded by MIER, is being taken forward.
