Philomena’s on a roll
WHEN Philomena Grimes took over at the helm at George’s Sandwich Bar in Leigh she faced an uphill struggle. The fortunes of Railway Road eaterie were flagging and Philomena admits that at first she found it difficult to earn a crust. But five years on and the new look George’s has pretty much become the toast of the local community.
It has a new venue, two doors down from the original George’s at 97 Railway Road, and a new menu – with the emphasis on healthy eating. In fact it’s so good that Philomena and her team have become the latest to receive Wigan Council’s coveted Healthy Business Award.
“We’ve always been quite health-conscious here,” says Philomena. “So when the Healthy Business Team came around and started working with us we found it really easy to make the changes they recommended.” These changes included simple things like offering fruit as an option, low sugar drinks and encouraging customers to consider using less salt.
George’s has a wide clientele ranging from the hungry dinner-hour drew, students wanting to sit and talk right through to Leigh ladies who lunch. Philomena’s menu includes healthy salad boxes, delicious filled jacket potatoes and all sorts of low-fat sarnie options to accommodate everyone.
“We’ve found that all of our customers have taken to the healthy options really well,” says Philomena. “Wherever possible we try and offer people low fat alternatives in terms of sandwich fillings and spreads and I think the customers really appreciate it.” She adds: “I thought getting involved with the Healthy Business Awards would be complicated at first but it turned out to be really easy. I got all the help I needed and I think it’s been good for business.”
George’s Sandwich Bar, 97 Railway Road, Leigh – opens each weekday between 8am and 3pm.
