Breastfeeding is best for baby because breastfed babies are protected against ear infections, chest infections, urine infections, childhood diabetes, eczema, obesity, and asthma.
Breastfeeding is best for mum because mothers who breastfeed their babies tend to return to their pre pregnancy figure faster and research shows that mothers who breastfeed are less likely to suffer Ovarian Cancer, Breast Cancer and weak bones in later life.
Wigan breastfeeding rates are amongst the lowest in the country. Questionnaires that were used to find out why this was so, suggested that lack of suitable places to breastfeed when mothers get out and about with their baby was a big factor.
The Business Award team know that there are many excellent businesses in Wigan that want to give good all round service to their customers; this includes welcoming mums to breastfeed in their premises. Businesses can apply for a Breastfeeding Friendly Award if they also have suitable nappy changing and washing facilities.
