Wigan Council is encouraging everyone to buy local

The global economy is suffering - and while Wigan’s business base is broad and diverse, our borough will feel the effects of the situation just like anywhere else. As a resourceful community, we have to find local solutions.

Buying local boosts our economy

Local businesses shape the character of our community – but they rely on local custom to thrive.

So we’re asking residents to buy local wherever possible so that together we can help protect our borough from the worst effects of these difficult economic times.

And it’s good for customers too!

Across our borough we’ve a great range of shops on your doorstep, with everything from large stores to long established local firms offering friendly service. So when you buy local it offers real benefits to customers as well to our local businesses.

Shoppers

Five great reasons to spend in the local community:

  1. You’ll be supporting the unique character and diversity of Wigan borough’s vibrant shopping districts.

  2. Your money will support local jobs and wages and improve the well-being of your community.

  3. If you shop locally you’ll be saving time and money with fewer travelling costs. You’ll find friendly service and specialist advice – all in one place!

  4. Thanks to your custom, local businesses are more likely to survive, succeed and stay local.

  5. Local businesses may well be a ‘greener’ choice, especially those who get their supplies locally and have lower transport costs.

We need your support

Together we really can make a difference. Show your support for the campaign by pledging to help our local businesses whenever you can.

Wigan Council’s deputy leader, Cllr David Molyneux, says:

“Shopping locally will help the economy throughout the borough because it will help to protect local jobs.

“But it’s also good for customers too. Your next purchases could be just streets away, so please consider the local options first, whether it’s a major purchase or a weekly food shop.”
