Advice and Guidance
Although the reasons for climate change are still being debated we have all seen the increasing risks from wetter winters and summer flash floods. Even in our borough, roads and homes have flooded and local rivers burst their banks. Even tiny changes to our climate means that it’s likely to become a more frequent concern.
Wigan Council works closely with partners in the Wigan Resilience Forum such as the Environment Agency, the emergency services and United Utilities to plan for and respond to flooding incidents. We are linked to the national Flood Forecasting Centre's warning service to let us know, as far as is predictable, if there an increased chance of severe weather coming our way.
We also work with community groups and the voluntary sector to help deliver greater individual and community resilience.
The Civil Contingencies Team plan and take part in Greater Manchester and local exercises to ensure we are prepared to respond to flooding emergencies.
