What evidence do I need to provide?

In order for us to correctly work out how much help you may be entitled to, we need to see evidence of certain things.

What Evidence Do I Need to Produce ?

We need to be sure that you are who you say you are, and that you live at the property you claim benefit for. To do this we will ask you to produce the type of evidence listed below and will also visit you at your home every so often.

You will have to provide ORIGINAL copies of various documents. Photocopies are not acceptable. Examples of the types of documents are:

Proof Of... Examples of Evidence
Identity Passport, marriage certificate, medical card.
Income you receive Wage slips, benefit award letters, pension books.
Your rent Rent book or tenancy agreement.
Your savings Bank Statement or Building Society Passbook. Proof of any investments, such as shares.
Income of anyone who lives in your home Wage slips, benefit award letters, pension books.

We realise that many people prefer not to send important documents to us in the post and are happy to see the documents at any of the Council's information offices where we will take a copy. You can also take your original documents along to the following libraries: Abram, Ashton, Aspull, Atherton, Golborne, Ince, Orrell, and Standish.

If your landlord is Arena, English Churches or County Palatine Housing Association you can take your original documents into their offices.

The Verification system is there to prevent fraud and not to make it difficult for people who genuinely qualify for benefits. If you have any difficulty with the new claims process we are here to help. In certain circumstances we can even arrange to visit you at home and help you with your claim.
