School Clothing Grants

School Uniforms - Support in Cases of Severe Hardship

In March 2007 a decision was made to discontinue school clothing grants previously available to families claiming income support.  This brings Wigan in line with most other Local Authorities who removed this grant some time ago.  In its place a small fund has been established to help families facing severe hardship.

Access to this grant can be made by contacting one of our officers attached to your child's school, or e mail clothinghardshipfund@wigan.gov.uk or telephone 01942 705405/705400 for further information.

Applications will only be considered in the following circumstances:

  • Urgent family relocation - resulting in, for instance, a need to change school (e.g. domestic violence or other crisis, or where the uniform may have been damaged through fire or flood);
  • The need for an unexpected move of a child from one school to another to address the child's educational needs;
  • Exceptional circumstances occurring as a result of a child being identified as not linked to a school roll - and where support towards a school uniform would aid that child's access and inclusion;
  • Families moving to the area as a result of seeking asylum

For an application to be considered under any of the headings, it will be necessary to demonstrate that your child's education will be severely affected if help to provide a uniform is not provided.
