Age Concern (External link) Provides general advice and information, as well as specialist services, e.g. free home safety checks, insurance services, holiday booking service, residential and nursing homes admission service, hospital information and support service, tenancy support service.
Care and Repair (External link) Care and Repair is an advisory service for older and disabled home owners or private tenants, who want to repair, improve or adapt their homes.
Commission for Social Care Inspection (External link) Provides useful information for people looking for care services for themselves or someone else.  You can do an on-line search for care homes, view inspection reports, and get advice about the sorts of questions to ask when looking at care homes or care services.
Department of Adult Services Provides a range of support for older people, including assistive technology.
Greater Manchester Passenger Transport Executive (External link) Once you are 60, you are entitled to free local travel with a concessionary bus pass. You need to complete a GMPTE application form, available from bus stations and libraries. Once complete, take it to your nearest library, Leigh Town Hall or Civic Centre, Wigan for council staff to issue your bus pass. You need to bring with you proof of your age and address (e.g. pension book, birth certificate, utility bill) and provide a passport-sized photograph of yourself. There is no charge for the bus pass.
Keeping Warm in Winter There is a range of information and advice from the Department of Health. You may also be able to get help to heat your home.
Older People's Network Co-ordinator Provides information about groups and societies in the borough for older people, e.g. lunch clubs, exercise classes, Over 50's Forum, etc.
Pension Service (External link) The Pension Service is part of the Department for Work and Pensions. They can help with pension credit queries, payment of benefit into banks, filling in application forms, winter fuel advice, etc.
Pensioners Link (External link) They provide a range of information and advice to older people, as well as a range of activities, e.g. computer courses, exercise classes, reach out service (counselling).
Starting Point A helpline run by Age Concern. It provides advice and information about local services that can help you to live independently.
Wigan POPP (External link) Twelve organisations are working together to improve services for older people in the borough, e.g. counselling, home security, physical activity, sheltered housing, etc.
