Roadworks Bulletin

Prepared 17 April 2014 - Issue 761

The aim of this bulletin is to give the public advance notice of road works in the Wigan Council area. The Council recognises that roadworks can cause inconvenience and it is hoped that this information helps to minimise delays and other problems associated with the works. Every effort has been made to provide accurate and the most up to date information available but it is not intended to be a definitive list and cannot cater for works carried out at short notice. The Council also reserves the right to make changes to the programme if emergencies arise.

1. Hough Lane, Tyldesley

Bus priority works are due to commence at the junction with Sale Lane. National Grid Gas will be replacing an old high pressure gas pipe. To carry out these works safely a road closure will be in operation from Tuesday 22 April 2014 for a period of 5 months. The diversion route for traffic will be: Sale Lane, Mosley Common Road, East Lancashire Road, Chaddock Lane, Manchester Road.

2. Spinning Jenny Way, Leigh

Bus priority works are proposed in Leigh town centre. The first stage will consist of utilities services being diverted. The utilities work will start on site on Monday 13 January 2014 and works are expected to be completed by April 2014. Throughout the scheme the traffic management will change and updates will be provided. From the start of the scheme lane closures will become operational between Brown Street South and High Street and delays in the peak period could be experienced.The traffic signals at the junction of Spinning Jenny Way, Chapel Street and Lord Street South have now returned to normal operation.

3. Mealhouse Lane, Atherton

Bus priority works are proposed in Atherton town centre. The roads that will be affected are Mealhouse Lane, Alma Street, Flapper Fold Lane, St John Street, Bolton Road and Water Street. The first stage will consist of utilities services being diverted. The utilities work will start on site on Monday 24 February 2014 and works are expected to be completed by the end of April 2014.British Telecom will be diverting their underground cables from Tuesday 22 April 2014 for approximately two weeks.

4. Elliott Street, Tyldesley

Bus priority works are proposed in Tyldesley town centre. The roads that will be affected are Elliott Street, Astley Street, Stanley Street and Railway Street. The first stage will consist of utilities services being diverted. The utilities work will start on site at the end of March 2014 and works are expected to be completed by July 2014.

Access to all properties and businesses will be maintained during the works.

British Telecom will be undertaking their diversion works and these will take place in the footway in Stanley Street from the rear of B & M Bargains to the junction with Elliott Street. These works are expected to commence on Tuesday 22 April 2014 for approximately two weeks.Virgin Media will be undertaking their diversion works in the footway on Elliott Street at the junction with Stanley Street and will continue along Stanley Street.Throughout the scheme the traffic management will change and updates will be provided.

5. Greenwood Avenue / Montrose Avenue, Wigan

United Utilities have major works planned to their waste water network on Greenwood Avenue between Montrose Avenue and Matheson Drive. To carry out their works road closures will be in operation in a phased approach from the 21 October 2013 until May 2014.Montrose Avenue: A road closure will replace the current single carriageway opening on Montrose Avenue from Wednesday 23 April 2014 for a period of 4 weeks with the exception of Saturday 26 April 2014 and Sunday 27 April 2014 when the current single carriageway will be in operation to facilitate football and rugby matches taking place at the D W Stadium.

Signage will be in place and a local diversion will apply. The one-way system will be suspended in sections to allow access for residents.

6. Warrington Road / Little Lane, Wigan

A new roundabout will be constructed and associated works including the closure of Little Lane commenced on Monday 27 January 2014 for approximately 20 weeks.

Little Lane has been closed off to through traffic at its junction with Warrington Road.

Temporary traffic signals will be in operation on Warrington Road at its junction with Little Lane from Tuesday 22 April 2014 for approximately 2 weeks.

Throughout the scheme the traffic management will change and updates will be provided.

7. Crompton Street / Standishgate / Mesnes Street / Mesnes Park Terrace, Wigan

Works have commenced on a road safety scheme on Monday 3 March 2014 for 11 weeks on Crompton Street, Standishgate and Market Street and also Mesnes Park Terrace at the junction with Bridgeman Terrace. At present all works are in the footway and no traffic management is expected for the forthcoming week. (Change of dates from last week)

8. Astley Waste Water Scheme

United Utilities are carrying out major waste water works around the Astley Area. Road closures have been set up to facilitate their works on the following streets:

  • North Lane, St Ambrose Road, Windsor Avenue, Willow Avenue, Cranworth Avenue
  • North Lane: Works will commence on North Lane from the junction with Willow Avenue to the junction of Kermishaw Nook on Monday 24 March 2014 for approximately 8 weeks.
  • St Ambrose Road: Works will commence on St Ambrose Road on Tuesday 22 April 2014 for approximately 12 weeks.

9. Brook Drive, Astley

United Utilities will be carrying out works to upsize the waste water network between both of its junctions with Manor Road. A road closure will be in place from Tuesday 3 December 2013 for 4 months. A local diversion will be in place during these works.

10. Astley Street, Tyldesley

TfGM will be carrying out the construction of plant protection works. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation from Monday 31 March 2014.

11. Ormskirk Road / Wallgate, Wigan

Works have commenced on Ormskirk Road from its junction with Ridyard Street to Saddle Junction and on Wallgate from its junction with Saddle Junction to its junction with Great George Street and are expected to be completed by early June 2014.

The works involve the removal of the cycle lane on the carriageway and improvements to the footway to incorporate the new cycle facilities.

  • Ormskirk Road and Wallgate: From Monday 21 April 2014 to Friday 25 April 2014 there will be no traffic management required.
  • Ormskirk Road: Monday 28 April 2014 until Friday 2 May 2014 temporary traffic signals will be in operation near to the junction with Heather Grove.
  • Wallgate: Monday 28 April 2014 until Friday 2 May 2014 there will be near side lane closures between Saddle Junction and Great George Street.

12. Sale Lane, Tyldesley

TfGM will be carrying out the construction of plant protection works near to the junction with Chester Road. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation from Monday 31 March 2014.

13. Bickershaw Lane / Smiths Lane, Bickershaw

BT will carry out works to install a new service from the junction with Beacon Road to outside of Owens Farm. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation during off peak times between Monday 7 April 2014 and Friday 18 April 2014.

14. Corner Lane, Leigh

Wigan Council will be undertaking footway resurfacing works between Westleigh Lane and Cambourne Drive. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation off peak from Tuesday 1 April 2014 until Friday 2 May 2014. Dates changed from last week.

15. Wigan Road, Ashton in Makerfield

Electricity North West will carry out works to install a new service at the junction with Alexandra Road. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation between Tuesday 8 April 2014 and Monday 21 April 2014.

16. Mort Lane, Tyldesley

Electricity North West commenced works to repair several cable faults outside of the substation on Thursday 10 April 2014. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation until Friday 25 April 2014. Duration changed from last week.

17. Borsdane Avenue / Lancaster Road, Hindley

A Private Contractor will be undertaking sewer connection works in the carriageway outside property number 10. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation from Monday 14 April 2014 for approximately 5 days. Following completion of this work the traffic signals will be moved onto Lancaster Road outside property number 112 for approximately 5 days. The Contractor will be undertaking works on Good Friday and Easter Monday.

18. Mosley Common Road, Worsley

National Grid Gas will carry out works near to the junction with Berwick Close between Thursday 17 April 2014 and Monday 21 April 2014 during off peak times. Stop/Go boards will be in operation during these works.

19. Atherleigh Way, Leigh

A Private Contractor will be undertaking carriageway resurfacing works at the junction with Leighbrook Way. To undertake these works safely lane closures will be in use on Tuesday 22 April 2014. Signage will be in place and a local diversion will apply.

Forthcoming Road Works and Closures

Poolstock Lane, Wigan

United Utilities will carry out works to replace a manhole cover and frame near to the junction with Marus Avenue. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation on Sunday 11 May 2014 during these works. Dates changed from last week.

Ormskirk Road, Wigan

United Utilities will carry out works to replace a manhole cover and frame near to the junction with Lichfield Street. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation on Sunday 11 May 2014 during these works. Dates changed from last week.

St Georges Day Parade Leigh – Lilford District Scouts

A walking procession is scheduled to take place on Sunday 27 April 2014 and will require closures on the following roads:

  • Chapel Street from its junction with Turner Street to its junction with Queen Street
  • Queen Street for its entire length
  • Bradshawgate for its entire length
  • Market Street for its entire length
  • Market Place from its junction with Market Street to its junction with St Marys Way
  • St Marys Way for its entire length
  • Lord Street for its entire length
  • Lord Street South for its entire length

The parade is due to commence after 13:00 hours for approximately 4 hours.

St Georges Day Parade Wigan – Wigan District Scouts

  • Mesnes Street from its junction with Bridgeman Terrace to its junction with Standishgate
  • Northway from its junction with Powell Street to its junction with Mesnes Street
  • Standishgate from its junction with Powell Street and Northway to its junction with Mesnes Street
  • Cromption Street from its junction with Mesnes Street and Standishgate to its junction with Riverway

The parade is due to commence after 10:45 hours for approximately 2 hours.
