Roadworks bulletin

The aim of this bulletin is to give the public advance notice of roadworks in the Wigan Council area. The council recognises that roadworks can cause inconvenience and it is hoped that this information helps to minimise delays and other problems associated with the works. Every effort has been made to provide accurate and the most up-to-date information available but it is not intended to be a definitive list and cannot cater for works carried out at short notice. The council also reserves the right to make changes to the programme if emergencies arise.

1. Hough Lane, Tyldesley

The main construction works are substantially complete and the road has re-opened.  However TfGM will be carrying out works between Monday 5 January 2015 and Friday 3 July 2015. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation on a part time basis for heavy plant crossings.

2. Astley Street, Tyldesley

TfGM are carrying out works between Upper George Street and Standish Street and in order to undertake these works safely single lane running will be in operation north bound from Astley towards Tyldesley. The works is expected to last into June 2015.

Astley Street is expected to open to two way traffic from Friday 12th June 2015.

3. Holden Road, Leigh

TfGM will be carrying out works to construct the traffic controlled junctions near to Rosebury Avenue. In order to undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation between Monday 5 January 2015 and Friday 3 July 2015.

4. Well Street, Tyldesley

TfGM will be carrying out works to construct the traffic controlled junctions between Railway Passage and Garden Street. From the 23 February 2015, Well Street will be narrowed to one lane with traffic being controlled by temporary traffic lights to allow construction vehicles access to the site. Following on from this, the junction works will then begin from 7 April 2015, and the same traffic system will remain in place.  This work will take around 7 months to complete.

5. Elmridge, Leigh

Temporary traffic signals will be in place whilst replacement pipe and manholes are constructed from the junction of The Avenue to the furthest part of the park car park. The work is expected to last until Friday 29 May 2015.

6. Manchester Road, Ince

Wigan Council will be carrying out work to resurface the carriageway between Pickup Street and Moat House Street on Sunday 31st May 2015 and Sunday 7th June. Whilst the work is being undertaken a road closure will be in place. The diversion route will be:

Manchester Road, Wigan Road, Liverpool Road, Walthew Lane, Warrington Road, Darlington Street, Manchester Road.

7. Spinning Jenny Way, Leigh

Work will be undertaken by Transport for Greater Manchester during the morning of Sunday 31st May 2015 to recut scoot loops. The work is expected to last only two hours and Stop/Go boards will be used during the work.

8. Nel Pan Lane, Leigh

A private contractor will be constructing a sewer connection to a new development near to Garden Vale from Monday 25th May 2015 to Saturday 30th May 2015. In order to do this a road closure will be in place. The diversion route will be: Leigh Road, Atherton Road, Corner Lane, Westleigh Lane.

From Monday 1st June 2015, two way traffic signals may be in place until the work is reinstated later in the week.

9. Ormskirk Road, Wigan

United Utilities will be carrying out work to replace a manhole frame and cover near to the junction with White Street on 31st May 2015. In order to carry out the work safely they will be using temporary traffic signals whilst the work is carried out.

10. Atherton Civic Parade

A walking procession is scheduled to take place on Sunday 31 May 2015 and will require closures on the following roads:

  • Bolton Old Road from its junction with Bradshaw Street to its junction with the A579 Bolton Road
  • A579 Bolton Road from its junction with Bradshaw Street to its junction with the A579 Church Street
  • A579 Church Street for its entire length
  • A579 Market Street from its junction with the A579 Church Street to its junction with St John Street
  • St John Street for its entire length
  • A577 Mealhouse Lane from its junction with St John Street to its junction with the A579 Bolton Road
  • Bradshaw Street for its entire length

The parade is due to commence after 09:45am for approximately 1 hour

11. Bickershaw Lane, Abram

Wigan Council will be carrying out works to resurface the carriageway at the junction with Blakeley's Recycling Centre and also between Brookside Farm and the former Queens Public House on Sunday 31st May 2015, Sunday 7th June 2015, Sunday 14th June 2015 and Sunday 21st June 2015. Whilst the work is being undertaken a road closure will be in place.

The diversion route for traffic will be: Warrington Road (Abram), Aye Bridge Road, Wigan Road, Lowton Road, Golborne Road, Slag Lane, Plank Lane, Firs Lane, Wigan Road (Leigh), Leigh Road, Smiths Lane, Bickershaw Lane. 

12. Frog Lane, Wigan

A private contractor will be undertaking work at the development near the Deanery High School to connect gas and electricity supplies. Work will commence in the evening of Wednesday 20th May 2015, when temporary signals will be in operation. Work will then resume on Saturday 23rd May 2015 to carry out a road crossing, again under temporary signals and will continue until Sunday 31st May 2015. Work will also take place from Monday 1st June 2015 but this work will be off the carriageway and will not impact on traffic.

13. Warrington Road, Abram

National Grid Gas commenced works to repair a gas escape on Tuesday 19 May 2015 near to the junction with Kingsdown Road. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals are now required and will be in operation from Wednesday 27 May 2015 for approximately 5 days.

14. Orrell Road, Orrell

United Utilities will be undertaking re-instatement works on Saturday 30 May 2015 near to the junction with West Mount. To undertake these works safely StopGo boards will be in operation.

15. Plank Lane, Leigh

United Utilities will be undertaking works to replace a manhole cover and frame on Saturday 30 May 2015 near to the junction with Common Lane. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works.

16. Newton Road, Lowton

United Utilities will be undertaking work to rectify a reinstatement on Saturday 30th May 2015 near to house number 228. In order to carry out this work safely, they will be using temporary traffic signals.

17. Wigan Road, Standish

United Utilities will be undertaking defect repair works on Sunday 31 May 2015 near to the junction with Greenways. To undertake these works safely StopGo boards will be in operation.

18. Castle Hill Road, Hindley

United Utilities will be carrying out works to renew a service near to the junction with Castle Street on Sunday 31 May 2015. To undertake these works safely StopGo boards will be in operation during these works.

19. Whelley, Wigan

United Utilities will be undertaking work to replace white line markings on Sunday 31 May 2015 near to the junction with Highfield Avenue. To undertake these works safely StopGo boards will be in operation during these works.

20. Miles Lane, Shevington

Electricity North West will be undertaking works to provide a new service near to the junction with Houghton Lane. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation on Sunday 31 May 2015.

21. Bolton Road, Bamfurlong

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace a manhole cover and frame outside property number 562 on Monday 1 June 2015. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in place during off peak times.

22. Rectory Lane, Standish

National Grid Gas will be undertaking works to repair valve covers either side of the Railway Bridge on Monday 1 June 2015. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works.

23. Whelley, Wigan

Electricity North West will be undertaking works to provide a new service near to the junction with Tamworth Drive between Monday 1 June 2015 and Thursday 4 June 2015 . To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation during off peak times.

24. Lower Green Lane / Rindle Road / Nook Lane, Tyldesley

BT will be carrying out works to provide a new service between the Timber Yard on Lower Green Lane and the Industrial Units on Nook Lane. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in place from Monday 1 June 2015 and Saturday 6 June 2015 between 21:00hrs and 06:00hrs, moving along as work progresses.

25. Liverpool Road, Platt Bridge

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace a manhole cover and frame at the junction with Stanley Road on Tuesday 2 June 2015. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in place during off peak times.

26. Bolton Road, Ashton in Makerfield

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace a manhole cover and frame at the junction with Golborne Road on Tuesday 2 June 2015. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in place during off peak times.

27. Heath Road, Ashton in Makerfield

ES Pipelines will be carrying out work outside the former St. Phillips Social Club on Tuesday 2nd June 2015 to lay an electric mains. To do this safely they will be using Stop/Go boards to control traffic.

28. Old Road, Ashton in Makerfield

BT will be carrying out work to provide a new service near to the junction of Spion Kop, using temporary traffic signals until Friday 29th May 2015.

United Utilities will be also be undertaking works at the same location to repair a leaking service. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation between Tuesday 2 June 2015 and Thursday 4 June 2015 during off peak times.

29. Bryn Road, Ashton in Makerfield

United Utilities will be carrying out work to repair a defect near to property number 462. The work will take place on Sunday 7th June 2015 and will require the use of temporary traffic signals.

30. Holden Road, Wigan

Wigan Council will be carrying out cycle path road markings from Bold Street to Sanderling Drive on Monday 1st June 2015 and Tuesday 2nd June 2015. To carry out this work safely, temporary traffic signals will be in operation.

31. Atherton Road, Hindley Green

Wigan Council will be working during the off peak period to repair a defective gulley at the junction of Swan Lane on Monday 1st June 2015. To do this safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation.

Forthcoming Street Works

Wigan Council Resurfacing Programme

Resurfacing work will be carried out by the council and it's contractors over the coming months to improve the condition of some of the borough's main roads. This will necessitate a series of road closures, lane closures and the placing of temporary traffic signals where appropriate. The majority of this work will take place on Sundays to minimise disruption and diversion routes will be clearly signed.

Further information will follow when dates/locations have been finalised.

Sale Lane, Tyldesley

TfGM will be carrying out work to construct a road crossing as part of the Leigh guided busway project near to Chester Road. The work will involve the use of two way signals and is expected to last up to three months. The start date is still to be determined but will be after Astley Street is re-opened to two way traffic.

Chaddock Lane, Astley

A private contractor will be carrying out work to connect gas services to the development at the Astley Park Estate from Saturday 20th June 2015 to Tuesday 23rd June 2015. In order to do this safely, temporary traffic signals will be in operation. Whilst this work is taking place, the temporary signals on Sale Lane will not be in use other than for plant crossing.

Manchester Road, Astley

Work will take place by a private contractor to connect utility services to the development opposite the Holyrood Day Nursery from Saturday 13th June 2015 to Friday 26th June 2015. They will need to use temporary traffic signals whilst the work is being carried out which will be manned at peak periods. This work will be suspended from Saturday 20th June to Tuesday 23rd June 2015 whilst the work on Chaddock Lane is undertaken.

Aspull Churches Together Walking Day

A walking procession is scheduled to take place on Sunday 7 June 2015 and will require closures on the following roads:

  • Haigh Road from its junction with Toddington Lane to its junction with St David's Crescent
  • St David's Crescent from its junction with Haigh Road to its junction with Holly Road
  • Holly Road from its junction with St David's Crescent to its junction with Wigan Road
  • Wigan Road from its junction with Holly Road to its junction with Bolton Road

The parade is due to commence at 14:00hrs for approximately 1 hour

Orrell United Churches Walking Day

A walking procession is scheduled to take place on Sunday 7 June 2015 and will require closures on the following roads:

  • Lodge Road from its junction with Winstanley Road to its junction with Sandy Lane
  • St Lukes Drive from its junction with Lodge Road to its junction with Vicarage Road
  • Vicarage Road from its junction with St Lukes Drive to its junction with Sandy Lane
  • Sandy Lane from its junction with Marl Grove to its junction with Lodge Road
  • Marl Grove from its junction with Sandy Lane to its junction with Jubilee Avenue
  • Jubilee Avenue from its junction with Marl Grove to its junction with Sandy Lane

The parade is due to commence at 14:00hrs for approximately 1 hour

Wrightington Street, Wigan

United Utilities will be carrying out work near to the junction with Dicconson Street on Sunday 14th June 2015 to replace a dangerous manhole frame and cover. To do this safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation.

Ratcliffe Road, Aspull

Electricity North West will be carrying out works on overhead cables between Haigh Road and Stanley Road. To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in operation on Monday 15 June 2015 and Tuesday 16 June 2015.  A local diversion will be in place for traffic.

Upholland Road, Billinge

Wigan Council will be carrying out resurfacing work from outside property 51 to the boundary with St Helens borough. The work will take place over three consecutive Sundays starting on 21st June 2015 and will require a road closure.

The diversion route will be: Upholland Road – Gantley Road - St James Road – Church Street – Winstanley Road – Wigan Road.

Liverpool Road, Platt Bridge

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace a manhole cover and frame near to the junction with Chapel Street on Sunday 21 June 2015. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in place during these works.

Chester Street, Leigh

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace a manhole cover and frame on Friday 26 June 2015. To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in operation during these works. 

A local diversion will be in place for traffic.

Newton Road, Lowton

Wigan Council will be carrying out resurfacing work on Newton Road from Winwick Lane to Heath Lane on Sunday 12th July and Sunday 19th July. A road closure will be in place whilst the work is being carried out. The diversion route is: East Lancashire Road, Warrington Road, Dale Road

Stone Cross Lane North, Lowton

United Utilities will be carrying out work to replace a manhole frame and cover near to the junction with Longton Avenue. The work will take place during the off peak period on Wednesday 15th July 2015 and will require the use of temporary traffic signals.

Warrington Road, Abram

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace two manhole covers and frames, one near to the junction with School Street and one at the junction with Kingsdown Road. To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in operation on Sunday 19 July 2015.

The diversion route for traffic will be: Warrington Road, Aye Bridge Road, Wigan Road, Church Street (Golborne), High Street, Bridge Street, A580 East Lancashire Road, Lodge Lane (Ashton in Makerfield), Warrington Road, Gerard Street, Bolton Road, Lily Lane (Platt Bridge), Warrington Road.

Westleigh Lane, Leigh

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace a manhole cover and frame near to the junction with Sovereign Fold Road on Sunday 26 July 2015. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works.

Bryn Road South, Ashton in Makerfield

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace a manhole cover and frame, one near to the junction with Bolton Road. To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in operation on Sunday 26 July 2015. 

The diversion route for traffic will be: Bolton Road, Wigan Road, Alexandra Road.
