Roadworks Bulletin

The aim of this bulletin is to give the public advance notice of road works in the Wigan Council area. The Council recognises that roadworks can cause inconvenience and it is hoped that this information helps to minimise delays and other problems associated with the works. Every effort has been made to provide accurate and the most up to date information available but it is not intended to be a definitive list and cannot cater for works carried out at short notice. The Council also reserves the right to make changes to the programme if emergencies arise.

1. Hough Lane, Tyldesley

Bus priority works are due to commence at the junction with Sale Lane. National Grid Gas will be replacing an old high pressure gas pipe. To carry out these works safely a road closure will be in operation from Tuesday 22 April 2014 for a period of 5 months.

The diversion route for traffic will be: Sale Lane, Mosley Common Road, East Lancashire Road, Chaddock Lane, Manchester Road.

2. Spinning Jenny Way, Leigh

Bus priority works are proposed in Leigh town centre.

The start date for the main construction works is the 7 July 2014 for approximately 20 weeks finishing in November 2014.

Arches Car Park – from Monday 25 August 2014 for approximately 6 weeks - works will be undertaken to upgrade and increase the capacity and in order to undertake this work safely it will be necessary to close the car park. Visitors and permit holders will be directed to surrounding car parks.

The site compound has been located on land between Spinning Jenny Way, Chapel Street and Brown Street South.

Chapel Street is now permanently closed between Brown Street South and Princess Street.

The northerly footway on Spinning Jenny Way has been temporarily closed between Brown Street South and Lord Street South.

The utility companies have now finished diverting their underground services; however BT will be in the area over the next few weeks connecting telephone lines to the new telegraph poles.

At present there will be no major activity on site and therefore no disruption to traffic.

Throughout the scheme the traffic management will change and updates will be provided.

3. Mealhouse Lane, Atherton

Bus priority works are proposed in Atherton town centre. The roads that will be affected are Mealhouse Lane, Alma Street, Flapper Fold Lane, St John Street, Bolton Road and Water Street.

The site compound has been set up on the Market Place to the rear of St John’s Church. The start date for the main construction works is the 7 July 2014 for approximately 14 weeks finishing in October 2014.

Mealhouse Lane – Week commencing Monday 15 September 2014 lane closures will be in place to enable works to be undertaken safely. There will also be a need to close Mealhouse Lane at the junction with Bolton Road (Bolton bound) on Monday 22 September 2014 for 1 week in order to undertake works on the carriageway . A local diversion will be in place.

Throughout the scheme the traffic management will change and updates will be provided.

4. Elliott Street, Tyldesley

Bus priority works are proposed in Tyldesley town centre. The roads that will be affected are Elliott Street, Astley Street, Stanley Street and Railway Street. The first stage will consist of utilities services being diverted. The utilities works have now started on site and these works are expected to be completed by July 2014.

Access to all properties and businesses will be maintained during the works.

The start date for the main construction works is still to be confirmed.

Ducting works by BT Openreach are now complete and they will be installing a junction box in Stanley Street over the next few weeks.

Virgin Media will be installing cables in the Square (across the end of Stanley Street) and Stanley Street / Shuttle Street junction (no date available at present).

Throughout the scheme the traffic management will change and updates will be provided.

5. Greenwood Avenue / Montrose Avenue, Wigan

United Utilities have major works planned to their waste water network on Greenwood Avenue between Montrose Avenue and Matheson Drive. To carry out their works road closures will be in operation in a phased approach from the 21 October 2013 until Friday 5 September 2014. (Date changed from last week)

6. Astley Waste Water Scheme

United Utilities are carrying out major waste water works around the Astley Area. Road closures have been set up to facilitate their works on the following streets:

North Lane, St Ambrose Road, Windsor Avenue, Willow Avenue, Cranworth Avenue

Local diversions will be in place during these works.

North Lane: Works will commence on North Lane from the junction with Willow Avenue to the junction of Kermishaw Nook on Monday 24 March 2014 for approximately 20 weeks.

St Ambrose Road: Works will commence on St Ambrose Road on Tuesday 22 April 2014 for approximately 16 weeks.

Cranworth Avenue: Works are now complete

Windsor Avenue: Works are now complete

Willow Avenue: Works are now complete

7. Astley Street, Tyldesley

TfGM will be carrying out the construction of plant protection works. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation from Monday 31 March 2014 on a part time basis.

8. Holden Road, Leigh

TfGM will be carrying out the construction of plant protection works. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation from Tuesday 6 May 2014 on a part time basis.

9. Well Street, Tyldesley

TfGM will be carrying out the construction of plant protection works. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation from Tuesday 6 May 2014 on a part time basis.

10. Sale Lane, Tyldesley

TfGM will be carrying out the construction of plant protection works near to the junction with Chester Road. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation from Monday 31 March 2014 on a part time basis.

11. Passageway between 28 & 30 and the adopted passage to the rear of 24-28 Gerard Street, Ashton in Makerfield

Wigan Council will be undertaking works to demolish and remove unsafe steps and the construction of new steps. Also the installation of bollards and laying of anti-slip surfacing of the demarcated pedestrian walkway. To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in place from Monday 8 September 2014 for 9 weeks.

12. Bickershaw Lane, Bickershaw

Wigan Council will be undertaking works at the railway bridge to replace the parapets. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in place from Wednesday 27 August 2014 for approximately three weeks.

13. The Avenue / Hanover Street / Elmridge, Leigh

United Utilities will carry out major works to construct a rising main from Tuesday 26 August 2014. To undertake their works safely road closures will be in operation until the end of November 2014. 

The Avenue: A road closure will be in operation from outside of property number 202 to approximately 50m north of its junction with Elmridge

Hanover Street: Thursday 18 September 2014 - A road closure will be in operation from the junction with The Avenue to the junction with Holden Road

Elmridge: Tuesday 16 September 2014 work is to commence on the footways / grass verges and from Monday 22 September 20914 a road closure will be in operation from the junction with The Avenue to the Lions Bridge pumping station

Holden Road: Tuesday 16 September 2014 work is to commence using temporary traffic signals for approximately 4 weeks.

Local diversions will be in place

14. Heath Road, Ashton in Makerfield

Electricity North West commenced cable reinforcement works on Tuesday 26 August 2014 near to the junction with Windsor Road. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation for approximately four weeks. 

15. Frog Lane, Wigan

Wigan Council will be carrying out carriageway resurfacing works from Lower St Stephen Street to the Railway Bridge on Sunday 31 August 2014 and Sunday 14 September 2014. To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in place.

The diversion route will be: Two way diversion - Woodhouse Lane, Park Road, Parsons Walk, New Market Street, Frog Lane.

16. Prescott Street, Wigan

Wigan Council will be carrying out carriageway resurfacing works at the Railway Bridge on Sunday 31 August 2014 and Sunday 14 September 2014. To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in place.

17. Grimshaw Street, Golborne

A private contractor will be carrying out work to a sewer connection from Wednesday 10 September 2014 to Friday 23 September 2014. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in place.

18. Old Road, Ashton in Makerfield

National Grid Gas will carry out works to install a new service near to the junction with Morden Avenue between Monday 1 September 2014 and Friday 12 September 2014. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works. 

19. Mather Lane, Siddow Common, Brunswick Street, Ramsey Street, Wigan

Wigan Council will be carrying out carriageway resurfacing works on Sunday 7 September 2014, Sunday 14 September 2014, and Sunday 21 September 2014.

To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in place. A local diversion will be in place.

20. Poolstock Lane, Wigan

Telecommunications works will be undertaken to install a new service near to the junction with Morton Avenue. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation between Sunday 7 September 2014 and Wednesday 10 September 2014 and on Sunday 14 September 2014. 

21. Scot Lane, Wigan

United Utilities will be carrying out excavation works near to Laurus Mews from Monday 8th September to Friday 19th September. Pedestrian walkways will be constructed and there will be temporary traffic lights in both directions.

22. Bolton Road, Aspull

BT will be carrying out work at the junction of Simms Square to install ducting to upgrade the service from Friday 12th September to Thursday 18th September. Two way traffic signals will be used in the off peak period.

23. Frog Lane, Wigan

A private contractor will undertake works on the railway bridge on behalf of Network Rail overnight on Sunday 13 September 2014 and also on Sunday 20 September 2014. To undertake their works safely a road closure will be in operation from 22:00hrs to 06:00hrs between Spring Gardens and Prescott Street. 

The diversion route for traffic will be: Woodhouse Lane, Park Road, Parsons Walk, New Market Street

24. Wallgate, Wigan

Transport for Greater Manchester will be undertaking works to recut the detector loops to the traffic signals near to the junction with Miry Lane on Sunday 14 September 2014. To undertake these works safely lane closures will be in operation at off peak hours.

25. Darlington Street East, Wigan

Transport for Greater Manchester will be undertaking works to recut the detector loops to the traffic signals at the junction with Warrington Lane on Sunday 14 September 2014. To undertake these works safely lane closures will be in operation at off peak hours.

26. Central Park Way, Wigan

Transport for Greater Manchester will be undertaking works to recut the detector loops to the traffic signals at the junction with Tesco on Sunday 14 September 2014. To undertake these works safely lane closures will be in operation at off peak hours.

27. Warrington Road, Ince

United Utilities will be carrying out work to replace meter approximately 120 metres from the junction with Moss Lane. The work will take place from Monday 15th September to Wednesday 17th September. Temporary traffic signals will be in place in both directions.

28. Standishgate, Wigan

United Utilities will undertake works to install a new water meter and fully re-instate the carriageway on Monday 15 September 2014 for ten days. To undertake their works safely a road closure will be in operation from its junction with Powell Street to its junction with Brick Kiln Lane. 

The diversion route for traffic will be: Powell Street, Central Park Way, Wigan Lane, Standishgate

29. Greenwood Avenue, Wigan

United Utilities will be carrying out works to repair a sewer outside number 53 from Monday 15th September to Friday 26th September. This will result in the road being closed. A local diversion will be in place.

30. Meadow Pit Lane, Haigh

Wigan Council will be carrying out carriageway resurfacing works on the bend near to Riley Lane on Saturday 13 September 2014. To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in place. A local diversion will be in place. 

31. East Lancashire Road

Wigan Council will be undertaking improvement works to the lighting columns and at the same time will undertake gully cleaning operations from the boundary with St Helens to the boundary with Salford.  These works will commence on Monday 15 September 2014 until Thursday 18 September 2014 and from Monday 22 September 2014 until Thursday 25 September 2014 Manchester bound and from Monday 29 September 2014 until Thursday 2 October 2014 and from Monday 6 October 2014 until Thursday 9 October 2014 Liverpool bound. To undertake these works safely a rolling lane closure will be in place.

32. Old Road, Ashton-in-Makerfield

United Utilities will be carrying out works to a water connecton outside the Old Police Station from Wednesday 17 September 2014 for approximately 3 days. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in use.

33. Walthew Lane, Platt Bridge

BT will be carrying out works to locate a blockage outside numbers 138 to 152 from Wednesday 17th September for approximately 5 days. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in use at off peak hours. 

Forthcoming roadworks and closures

Kitt Green Road, Wigan

United Utilities will be carrying out work to clean a water main from Monday 22nd September to Tuesday 23rd September near to the junction with Comet Road. The work will take place from 1900 hours to 0700 hours. Temporary traffic signals will be in use.

Bickershaw Lane, Bickershaw

United Utilities will be carrying out work to repair a leaking water service from Wednesday 24th September to Friday 26th September. Temporary traffic signals will be in place for the duration of the work.

Martland Mill Lane, Wigan

Network Rail will be carrying out brickwork repairs to the railway bridge from Monday 22nd September to Friday 3rd October. Temporary traffic lights will be in operation from 0730 to 1730.

Bell Lane, Orrell

United Utilities will be carrying out cleaning of existing mains from Thursday 25th September to Friday 26th September. Two way temporary traffic signals will be in operation from 1700 to 0700.
