Roadworks bulletin

The aim of this bulletin is to give the public advance notice of roadworks in the Wigan Council area. The council recognises that roadworks can cause inconvenience and it is hoped that this information helps to minimise delays and other problems associated with the works. Every effort has been made to provide accurate and the most up-to-date information available but it is not intended to be a definitive list and cannot cater for works carried out at short notice. The council also reserves the right to make changes to the programme if emergencies arise.

1. Hough Lane, Tyldesley

The main construction works are substantially complete and the road has re-opened.  However TfGM will be carrying out works between Monday 5 January 2015 and Friday 3 July 2015. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation on a part time basis for heavy plant crossings.

2. Spinning Jenny Way, Leigh

TfGM is improving Leigh Bus Station as part of their bus priority investment package. Work will start on 9 March 2015.

3. Astley Street, Tyldesley

TfGM are carrying out works between Upper George Street and Standish Street and in order to undertake these works safely single lane running will be in operation north bound from Astley towards Tyldesley, via use of a temporary roadway.

4. Holden Road, Leigh

TfGM will be carrying out works to construct the traffic controlled junctions near to Rosebury Avenue. In order to undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation between Monday 5 January 2015 and Friday 1 May 2015.

5. Well Street, Tyldesley

TfGM will be carrying out works to construct the traffic controlled junctions between Railway Passage and Garden Street. From the 23 February 2015, Well Street will be narrowed to one lane with traffic being controlled by temporary traffic lights to allow construction vehicles access to the site. Following on from this, the junction works will then begin from 7 April 2015, and the same traffic system will remain in place.  This work will take around 7 months to complete.

6. The Avenue / Hanover Street / Elmridge, Leigh

United Utilities will carry out major works to construct a rising main from Tuesday 26th August 2014. To undertake their works safely road closures will be in operation until the end of April 2015. 

The Avenue: A road closure will be in operation from outside of property number 202 to approximately 50m north of its junction with Elmridge from Monday 29th September 2014 until Thursday 30th April 2015.

Hanover Street: A road closure will be in operation from the junction with The Avenue to the junction with Holden Road from Thursday 18th September 2014 until Thursday 30th April 2015.

Elmridge: Temporary traffic signals will be in place whilst replacement pipe and manholes are constructed from the junction of The Avenue to the furthest part of the park car park. The work is expected to last until Thursday 30th April 2015

7. Chorley Road/Wigan Road, Standish

From Tuesday 21st April 2015 to Thursday 23rd April 2015, BT will be carrying out work near to the Boar's Head roundabout on Wigan Road to locate and excavate a blockage in a duct. All work will be carried out during the off peak period using temporary traffic signals.

On Friday 24th April 2015 BT will need to work at the junction of Red Rock Lane and Chorley Road to permanently reinstate the work carried out there recently. They will be using temporary traffic signals during the off peak period.

All this BT work is needed for the installation of superfast broadband in the area.

8. Woodhouse Lane, Wigan

National Grid Gas will be carrying out work near the junction of Ingram Street to replace a gas main. The work will take place between Tuesday 10th March 2015 and Wednesday 29th April and will require the use of temporary traffic signals.

9. Warrington Road / Clapgate Lane, Wigan

Wigan Council will be undertaking junction improvement works between Monday 9 March 2015 and Thursday 30 April 2015. In order to undertake these works safely lane closures will be in place.

10. Poolstock/Chapel Lane, Wigan

Electricity North West will be carrying out essential cable reinforcement works from Helmsman Way to Chapel Lane starting on Monday 16th March 2015. The work is expected to last until Friday 24th April and they will be using two way temporary traffic signals when needed. They will move along the roadway as each section is complete and the lights will be manned at peak periods.

11. Twist Lane, Leigh

National Grid gas will be carrying out work at the junction with Wigan Road (Sportsman Junction) from Monday 13th April 2015 for three weeks. The majority of the work will take place off the carriageway but during the second week (week commencing 20th April 2015) temporary traffic lights will be needed to carry out the work safely.

12. Moor Road, Orrell

United Utilities will be carrying out work between Wednesday 22nd April 2015 and Friday 24th April 2015 to repair a dangerous manhole frame. They will be using temporary traffic signals for the duration of the works.

13. Old Pepper Lane, Standish

A private contractor will be carrying out works to install a new electrical service to a housing development near to the junction with Broadacre. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation between Wednesday 15 April 2015 and Tuesday 28 April 2015.

14. Bolton Road, Ashton in Makerfield

United Utilities will be carrying out works to renew a service outside of property number 556 between Monday 20 April 2015 and Wednesday 22 April 2015. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works.

15. Higher Green Lane, Astley

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace a manhole cover and frame near to the junction with Ellesmere Street on Tuesday 21 April 2015. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation from 19:00hrs whilst these works are undertaken.

16. Warrington Road, Platt Bridge

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace a manhole cover and frame at the junction with Templeton Road on Tuesday 21 April 2015. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation from 21:00hrs whilst these works are undertaken.

17. St Helens Road, Leigh

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace two manhole covers and frames outside of property numbers 326 and 331 on Friday 24 April 2015. To undertake these works safely StopGo boards will be in operation during off peak times.

18. Warrington Road, Wigan

United Utilities will be working near to Skew Bridge on Sunday 26th April 2015 to carry out defect works. They will be using temporary traffic signals whilst the work takes place.

19. Cale Lane, Aspull

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace a manhole cover and frame near to the junction with Ash Lane. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation on Sunday 26 April 2015.

20. St George's Day Parade, Wigan

On Sunday 26th April 2015 a parade will take place in Wigan resulting in a number of temporary road closures:

Crawford Street – full length. Bishopgate – full length. Hallgate – from Bishopgate to Market Street. New Market Street and the New Market Street slip road – from Market Street to Mesnes Street. Mesnes Street – from Bridgeman Terrace to Standishgate. Northway – from Powell Street to Mesnes Street. Standishgate – from Powell Street and Northway to Mesnes Street. Crompton Street – from Riverway to Standishgate and Mesnes Street.

21. Church Lane, Lowton

Wigan Council will be carrying out work to repair a defective gully connection near to house number 104 from Wednesday 22nd April 2015 to Friday 24th April 2015. To do this safely they will be using temporary traffic signals. Work will take place in the off-peak period.

22. Parbrook Lane, Shevington

United Utilities will be working near to house number 29 on Wednesday 23rd April 2015 to replace a dangerous manhole frame and cover. They will be using temporary traffic signals whilst the work is taking place.

23. Woodhouse Lane, Wigan

Wigan Council will be working during the off peak period to repair a gully near to the junction with Park Road from Wednesday 22nd April 2015 to Friday 24th April 2015. To do this safely they will be using temporary traffic signals.

24. Manchester Road, Leigh

On Saturday 25th April 2015, United Utilities will be working near to the junction with Holden Road to repair a manhole frame and cover. They will be utilising temporary traffic signals whilst the work takes place.

Forthcoming Street Works

Nel Pan Lane, Leigh

A private contractor will be constructing a sewer connection to a new development near to Garden Vale from Monday 25th May 2015 to Friday 29th May 2015. In order to do this a road closure will be in place. The diversion route will be: Leigh Road, Atherton Road, Corner Lane, Westleigh Lane.

Warrington Road, Wigan

Electricity North West will be carrying out work to divert cables near to the Marus Bridge roundabout. The work will take place from Monday 11th May 2015 to Friday 22nd May 2015 and will involve lane closures whilst the work is carried out. Work will take place during the off peak period.

Avondale Street/Preston Road, Standish

On Sunday 24th May 2015 United Utilities will be carrying out work to repair a dangerous manhole frame and cover. In order to carry out the work safely, Avondale Street will be closed to traffic and two way temporary traffic signals will be used on Preston Road.

Borsdane Avenue, Hindley

A private contractor will be working from Tuesday 5th May 2015 to Tuesday 19th May 2015 to connect gas and electricity supplies to the new development at the site of the old Tanfield School. During the first week of work it will be necessary for temporary traffic signals to be used which will be manned at peak times.

Higher Lane, Aspull

Electricity North West will be carrying out works to lift overhead lines on Thursday 21 May 2015 near to the junction with Wigan Road. To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in place.

The diversion route for traffic will be: Wigan Road, Haigh Road, Copperas Lane, New Road

Warrington Road, Ince

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace a manhole cover and frame at its junction with Moss Lane. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation on Sunday 24 May 2015.
