Roadworks bulletin

The aim of this bulletin is to give the public advance notice of roadworks in the Wigan Council area. The council recognises that roadworks can cause inconvenience and it is hoped that this information helps to minimise delays and other problems associated with the works. Every effort has been made to provide accurate and the most up-to-date information available but it is not intended to be a definitive list and cannot cater for works carried out at short notice. The council also reserves the right to make changes to the programme if emergencies arise.

1. Hough Lane, Tyldesley

The main construction works are substantially complete and the road has re-opened.  However TfGM will be carrying out works between Monday 5 January 2015 and Friday 3 July 2015. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation on a part time basis for heavy plant crossings.

2. Holden Road, Leigh

TfGM will be carrying out works to construct the traffic controlled junctions near to Rosebury Avenue. In order to undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation between Monday 5 January 2015 and Friday 3 July 2015.

3. Well Street, Tyldesley

TfGM will be carrying out works to construct the traffic controlled junctions between Railway Passage and Garden Street. From the 23 February 2015, Well Street will be narrowed to one lane with traffic being controlled by temporary traffic lights to allow construction vehicles access to the site. Following on from this, the junction works will then begin from 7 April 2015, and the same traffic system will remain in place.  This work will take around 7 months to complete.

4. Elmridge, Leigh

Temporary traffic signals will be in place whilst replacement pipe and manholes are constructed from the junction of The Avenue to the furthest part of the park car park. The work is expected to last until Friday 3 July 2015

5. East Bond Street, Leigh

TfGM will be carrying out work to construct a new traffic controlled crossroads at the junction with Princess Street. This work will involve the use of multiway temporary traffic signals and is expected to last until Friday 21 August 2015.

6. Sale Lane, Tyldesley

TfGM will be carrying out work to construct a road crossing as part of the Leigh guided busway project near to Chester Road. The work will involve the use of two way signals and is expected to last up to three months. The work is now underway and is expected to last for three months.

7. Upholland Road, Billinge

Wigan Council will be carrying out resurfacing work from outside property 51 to the boundary with St Helens borough. The work will take place over three consecutive Sundays starting on 21st June 2015 and will require a road closure.

The diversion route will be: Upholland Road – Gantley Road - St James Road – Church Street – Winstanley Road – Wigan Road.

8. Atherleigh Way, Leigh

Work will commence, by a private contractor, to construct a new site entrance for the 5 Boroughs Partnership - NHS Mental Health Unit opposite the junction with Leighbrook Way (access to Sainsburys) on Monday 22nd June 2015. The work is expected to last approximately 7-8 weeks and will involve, at times, a lane closure, temporary traffic lights and the suspension of the right turn onto Leighbrook Way. Traffic management will be altered to accommodate the works in progress.

9. Shevington Lane, Shevington

National Grid Gas will be undertaking valve remediation works between Wednesday 24 June 2015 and Friday 10 July 2015. Works will commence near to property number 195 moving along as work progresses to the junction with Crow Orchard Road. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works.

10. Crank Road, Billinge

National Grid Gas will be carrying out gas mains replacement works near to the junction with Coleridge Road from Friday 26 June 2015 to Thursday 23 July 2015. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works.

11. Frog Lane, Wigan

A private contractor will be working near to the Deanery High School to install a gas connection from Saturday 4th July 2015. They will aim to get the connection done on the Sunday but  will need to reinstate on the Monday. The connection point will not close the footway and it will be safe for pedestrians to get past the works. The reinstatement will be done during the off peak periods on Monday 6th July. Temporary traffic signals will be in use.

12. Mort Lane, Tyldesley

Electricity North West will be carrying out work to rectify a faulty street light near to the railway bridge from Monday 29th June 2015 to Friday 3rd July. In order to do this work safely they will require the use of temporary traffic signals

13. Castle Hill Road, Hindley

United Utilities will be working opposite property number 85 to repair a damaged sewer from Monday 29th June 2015 to Tuesday 7th July 2015. All work will take place during the off peak period and will require the use of temporary traffic signals.

14. Old Pepper Lane, Standish

A private contractor will be undertaking works to provide new service connections near to the junction with Broadacre between Monday 29 June 2015 and Friday 10 July 2015. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works.

15. Manchester Road, Leigh

United Utilities will be undertaking works to install a new service near to the junction with Sussex Street between Tuesday 30 June 2015 and Friday 3 July 2015. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works.

16. Nook Lane, Golborne

Virgin Media will be undertaking works to install a new service near to the junction with Barrowdale Road between Tuesday 30 June 2015 and Friday 3 July 2015. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works.

17. Elliott Street, Tyldesley

Wigan Council will be carrying out work near to the junction with Astley Street from 2200-0600 on Thursday 2nd July as part of the TfGM guided busway project. To facilitate the works the road will be closed to traffic and a local diversion put in place.

Forthcoming Street Works

Wigan Council Resurfacing Programme

Resurfacing work will be carried out by the council and it's contractors over the coming months to improve the condition of some of the borough's main roads. This will necessitate a series of road closures, lane closures and the placing of temporary traffic signals where appropriate. The majority of this work will take place on Sundays to minimise disruption and diversion routes will be clearly signed.

Further information will follow when dates/locations have been finalised.

Parsons Walk, Wigan

Wigan Council will be carrying out carriageway resurfacing works at the junction with Bull Hey car park on Sunday 5 July 2015, and a road closure will be in place during these works.

The diversion route for traffic will be: Park Road - Woodhouse Lane - Frog Lane - Parsons Walk.

Wigan Parish Church Walking Day

A walking procession is scheduled to take place on Sunday 5 July 2015 and will require closures on the following roads:

  • Bishopgate for its entire length
  • Hallgate from its junction with Bishopgate to its junction with Market Street
  • Market Street from its junction with Hallgate to its junction with New Market Street
  • New Market Street and New Market Street slip road from the junction with Market Street to the junction with Mesnes Street
  • Mesnes Street from its junction with Bridgeman Terrace to its junction with Standishgate
  • Standishgate from its junction with Powell Street / Northway to its junction with Mesnes Street
  • Crompton Street from its junction with Riverway to its junction with Standishgate / Mesnes Street

The parade is due to commence at 14:00hrs for approximately 1 hour

Warrington Road, Ince

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace a manhole cover and frame near to the junction with Moss Lane on Sunday 5 July 2015. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works.

Highfield Grange Avenue, Wigan

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace a manhole cover and frame at the junction with Warrington Road on Sunday 5 July 2015. To undertake these works safely lane closures will be in operation on Highfield Grange Avenue and Warrington Road during these works.

Chorley Road, Standish

United Utilities will be carrying out defect works at the junction with Water Drive on Sunday 5 July 2015. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works.

Manchester Road, Ince

Transport for Greater Manchester (TfGM) will be carrying out works to re-cut detector loops near to the junction with Pickup Street on Sunday 5 July 2015. To undertake these works safely StopGo boards will be in operation during these works.

Manchester Road, Leigh

National Grid Gas will be carrying out works to renew a service near to the junction with Ennerdale Road on Sunday 5 July 2015. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works.

North Road, Atherton

United Utilities will be carrying out work to replace a manhole frame and cover at the junction of North Croft on Wednesday 8th July 2015. To do this work safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation.

Gerard Street, Ashton in Makerfield

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace a manhole cover and frame at the junction with Wigan Road on Sunday 12 July 2015. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works.

Newton Road, Lowton

Wigan Council will be carrying out resurfacing work on Newton Road from Winwick Lane to Heath Lane on Sunday 12th July and Sunday 19th July. A road closure will be in place whilst the work is being carried out.

The diversion route is: East Lancashire Road, Warrington Road, Golborne Dale Road

Stone Cross Lane North, Lowton

United Utilities will be carrying out work to replace a manhole frame and cover near to the junction with Longton Avenue. The work will take place during the off peak period on Wednesday 15th July 2015 and will require the use of temporary traffic signals.

Warrington Road, Abram

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace two manhole covers and frames, one near to the junction with School Street and one at the junction with Kingsdown Road. To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in operation on Sunday 19 July 2015.

The diversion route for traffic will be: Warrington Road, Aye Bridge Road, Wigan Road, Church Street (Golborne), High Street, Bridge Street, A580 East Lancashire Road, Lodge Lane (Ashton in Makerfield), Warrington Road, Gerard Street, Bolton Road, Lily Lane (Platt Bridge), Warrington Road.

Ironman UK 2015

Ironman is a race event that takes place in the UK every year and it involves a 2.4 mile swim, 112 mile cycle and 26.2 mile run. This year the swim will use Pennington Flash and the cycle race will use roads in Leigh, Atherton and Standish. The event will be held on Sunday 19 July 2015 and start in Pennington Flash in the morning. The following roads in Leigh and Atherton will be closed to traffic for the safety of competitors, spectators and motorists from 06:00hrs to 09:30hrs:

  • St Helens Road, Leigh from its junction with Pennington Flash Access Road to its junction with Atherleigh Way
  • Atherleigh Way, Leigh from its junction with St Helens Road to its junction with Wigan Road  Atherton
  • Gibfield Park Way, Atherton from its junction with Wigan Road to its junction with North Road
  • North Road, Atherton from its junction with Colliery Lane to its junction with Platt Lane, Westhoughton

The diversion route for traffic on the above roads will be: Bag Lane (Atherton), Gloucester Street, Wigan Road, Mealhouse Lane, Market Street, Leigh Road, Market Street (Leigh), Market Place, King Street, St Helens Road

The following roads in Standish will be closed to traffic for the safety of competitors, spectators and motorists from 08:00hrs to 16:00hrs:

  • Boundary Lane Standish for its entire length
  • Pepper Lane Standish for its entire length
  • A49 Preston Road Standish from its junction with Pepper Lane to its junction with Coppull Moor Lane

The diversion route for Standish traffic will be: Crow Orchard Road, Shevington Lane, Almond Brook Road, School Lane, Preston Road

The race will then continue into Chorley.  Residential and emergency access will be maintained at all times during the above road closures.

Northway / Powell Street, Wigan

Wigan Council will be carrying out carriageway resurfacing works between Dicconson Street and Hilton Street on Sunday 19 July 2015 and Sunday 26 July 2015. A lane closure will be in place on Northway/Powell Street, and the junction with Standishgate will be closed during these works. A local diversion will be in place for access to Standishgate.

Holden Road, Leigh

Wigan Council will be carrying out carriageway resurfacing works between the junction with Wensleydale Road and the junction with Manchester Road from Monday 20 July 2015 for two weeks. To undertake these works safely Holden Road will be reduced to one way traffic travelling in a south-easterly direction during off peak hours with a diversion in place for Leigh bound traffic.

The diversion route for Leigh bound traffic will be: Manchester Road - Chapel Street - Princess Street - College Street - Guest Street.

Atherton Road, Hindley

Wigan Council will be carrying out resurfacing work on Atherton Road from outside property number 118 to the junction with George Street on Sunday 19 July 2015 and Sunday 26 July 2015. To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in place during these works.

The diversion route is: Atherton Road - Corner Lane - Smallbrook Lane - Wigan Road (Atherton) - Schofield Lane - Lower Leigh Road (Westhoughton) - Leigh Road - Cricketers Way - Wigan Road - Castle Hill Road (Hindley) - Bridge Street - Market Street

In addition to the above a local diversion will be in place for one way traffic travelling along Lord Street.

Warrington Road, Wigan

Wigan Council will be carrying out work at the junction of Poolstock Lane and Highfield Grange Avenue to replace the existing roundabout with a traffic light system. Work will commence on Monday 20th July 2015 and is expected to take 21 weeks to complete. Work will be undertaken with a series of lane closures where necessary, during the off peak period and every effort will be made to keep traffic disruption to a minimum.

Westleigh Lane, Leigh

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace a manhole cover and frame near to the junction with Sovereign Fold Road on Sunday 26 July 2015. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works.

Bryn Road South, Ashton in Makerfield

United Utilities will be carrying out works to replace a manhole cover and frame, one near to the junction with Bolton Road. To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in operation on Sunday 26 July 2015.

The diversion route for traffic will be: Bolton Road, Wigan Road, Alexandra Road.

York Road, Ashton in Makerfield

National Grid Gas will be carrying out remedial works at the junction with Princess Road on Sunday 26 July 2015. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works.

Gathurst Road, Orrell

National Grid Gas will be carrying out work opposite the Kawasaki shop to rectify a faulty valve box. The work will take place on Sunday 2nd August 2015 and will require the use of temporary traffic signals whilst the work is carried out.

Haigh Road, Aspull

A private contractor will be carrying out work at a new development (Haigh Court) to install utility services to the site. The work will take place from Monday 3rd August 2015 to Friday 28th August 2015 and will at times require the use of temporary traffic signals.
