Roadworks Bulletin

The aim of this bulletin is to give the public advance notice of road works in the Wigan Council area. The Council recognises that roadworks can cause inconvenience and it is hoped that this information helps to minimise delays and other problems associated with the works. Every effort has been made to provide accurate and the most up to date information available but it is not intended to be a definitive list and cannot cater for works carried out at short notice. The Council also reserves the right to make changes to the programme if emergencies arise.

1. Hough Lane, Tyldesley

Bus priority works are due to commence at the junction with Sale Lane. National Grid Gas will be replacing an old high pressure gas pipe. To carry out these works safely a road closure will be in operation from Tuesday 22 April 2014 for a period of 5 months.  

The diversion route for traffic will be: Sale Lane, Mosley Common Road, East Lancashire Road, Chaddock Lane, Manchester Road 

2. Spinning Jenny Way, Leigh

Bus priority works are proposed in Leigh town centre.

The start date for the main construction works is the 7 July 2014 for approximately 20 weeks finishing in November 2014.

Brown Street South between Gas Street and Queen Street will remain closed for the next few weeks to enable works to be undertaken safely.

Queen Street – Monday 25 July 2014 – works will commence near to the junction with Princess Street. Disruption to traffic will be kept to a minimum.

Arches Car Park – from Monday 25 August 2014 for approximately 6 weeks - works will be undertaken to upgrade and increase the capacity and in order to undertake this work safely it will be necessary to close the car park. Visitors and permit holders will be directed to surrounding car parks. (Date changed from last week)

The site compound has been located on land between Spinning Jenny Way, Chapel Street and Brown Street South.

The utility companies have now finished diverting their underground services; however BT will be in the area over the next few weeks connecting telephone lines to the new telegraph poles.

At present there will be no major activity on site and therefore no disruption to traffic.

Throughout the scheme the traffic management will change and updates will be provided.

3. Mealhouse Lane, Atherton

Bus priority works are proposed in Atherton town centre. The roads that will be affected are Mealhouse Lane, Alma Street, Flapper Fold Lane, St John Street, Bolton Road and Water Street.

The site compound has been set up on the Market Place to the rear of St John’s Church. The start date for the main construction works is the 7 July 2014 for approximately 14 weeks finishing in October 2014.

Mealhouse Lane – Week commencing Monday 28 July 2014 lane closures will be in place to enable works to be undertaken safely.

Throughout the scheme the traffic management will change and updates will be provided.

4. Elliott Street, Tyldesley

Bus priority works are proposed in Tyldesley town centre. The roads that will be affected are Elliott Street, Astley Street, Stanley Street and Railway Street. The first stage will consist of utilities services being diverted.  The utilities works have now started on site and these works are expected to be completed by July 2014.

Access to all properties and businesses will be maintained during the works.

The start date for the main construction works is still to be confirmed.

Ducting works by BT Openreach are now complete and they will be installing a junction box in Stanley Street over the next few weeks.

Virgin Media will be installing cables in the Square (across the end of Stanley Street) and Stanley Street / Shuttle Street junction (no date available at present).

Throughout the scheme the traffic management will change and updates will be provided.

5. Greenwood Avenue / Montrose Avenue, Wigan

United Utilities have major works planned to their waste water network on Greenwood Avenue between Montrose Avenue and Matheson Drive. To carry out their works road closures will be in operation in a phased approach from the 21 October 2013 until August 2014.

6. Warrington Road, Ince

National Grid Gas will carry out major gas works on Warrington Road between Ince Green Lane and Bridge Street from Monday 19 May 2014 for approximately 16 weeks. To carry out their works temporary traffic signals will be in operation on Warrington Road and road closures will be in operation on Knowles Street and Chorley Street in a phased approach. A road closure is no longer required on Manley Street.

Throughout the scheme the traffic management will change and updates will be provided.

Warrington Road: Temporary traffic signals will be in operation near to the junction with Richard Street from Friday 1 August 2014 to Friday 22 August 2014

7. Crompton Street / Standishgate / Mesnes Street / Mesnes Park Terrace, Wigan

Works have commenced on a road safety scheme on Monday 3 March 2014 on Crompton Street, Standishgate and Market Street and also Mesnes Park Terrace at the junction with Bridgeman Terrace.  The works are expected to be completed by the end of August 2014.

Sunday 17 August 2014 works will commence to repaint the road markings. There may be a need for further dates to be complete these works but these are not known at the present time.

8. Astley Waste Water Scheme

United Utilities are carrying out major waste water works around the Astley Area. Road closures have been set up to facilitate their works on the following streets:

North Lane, St Ambrose Road, Windsor Avenue, Willow Avenue, Cranworth Avenue

Local diversions will be in place during these works.

North Lane: Works will commence on North Lane from the junction with Willow Avenue to the junction of Kermishaw Nook on Monday 24 March 2014 for approximately 20 weeks.

St Ambrose Road: Works will commence on St Ambrose Road on Tuesday 22 April 2014 for approximately 16 weeks.

Cranworth Avenue: Works will commence on Cranworth Avenue from the junction with Beechwood Crescent to the junction with Windsor Avenue on Monday 12 May 2014 for approximately 12 weeks.

Windsor Avenue: Works will commence on Windsor Avenue on Monday 19 May 2014 for approximately 12 weeks.

Willow Avenue: Works are now complete

9. Astley Street, Tyldesley

TfGM will be carrying out the construction of plant protection works. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation from Monday 31 March 2014 on a part time basis.

10. Holden Road, Leigh

TfGM will be carrying out the construction of plant protection works. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation from Tuesday 6 May 2014 on a part time basis.

11. Well Street, Tyldesley

TfGM will be carrying out the construction of plant protection works. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation from Tuesday 6 May 2014 on a part time basis.

12. Ormskirk Road / Wallgate, Wigan

Works have commenced on Ormskirk Road from its junction with Ridyard Street to Saddle Junction and on Wallgate from its junction with Saddle Junction to its junction with Great George Street and are expected to be completed by late August 2014.

The works involve the removal of the cycle lane on the carriageway and improvements to the footway to incorporate the new cycle facilities.

Works are almost complete and disruption to traffic will be kept to a minimum.

13. Sale Lane, Tyldesley

TfGM will be carrying out the construction of plant protection works near to the junction with Chester Road. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation from Monday 31 March 2014 on a part time basis.

14. Passageway between 28 & 30 and the adopted passage to the rear of 24-28 Gerard Street, Ashton in Makerfield

Wigan Council will be undertaking works to demolish and remove unsafe steps and the construction of new steps. Also the installation of bollards and laying of anti-slip surfacing of the demarcated pedestrian walkway. To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in place from Monday 21 July 2014 for 6 weeks.

15. Bickershaw Lane, Bickershaw

United Utilities are currently repairing a collapsed sewer near the junction with Brown Street with temporary traffic signals in place. Bickershaw Lane will have to be closed from Tuesday 19 August 2014 for approximately one week to enable the sewer to be fixed.

The diversion route will be: Smith’s Lane, Leigh Road, Atherton Road, Liverpool Road, Warrington Road.   

16. Warrington Road, Ashton in Makerfield

Electricity North West will be carrying out cable reinforcement works near the junction with Chelwood Park between Monday 4 August 2014 and Sunday 31 August 2014. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works.

17. Ince Green Lane, Ince

National Grid Gas will be carrying out works to renew a service near to the junction with Manchester Road between Friday 8 August 2014 and Friday 22 August 2014. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation when required during these works.

18. Church Street, Orrell

National Grid Gas will be carrying out works to install a new service near to the junction with Lodge Road between Monday 11 August 2014 and Friday 29 August 2014. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works.

19. Liverpool Road, Hindley

Wigan Council will be undertaking carriageway patching works from Emlyn Street to Blackberry Drive from Wednesday 20 August 2014 to Friday 22 August 2014. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation at off peak hours.

20. Wigan Road, Ashton

Wigan Council will be undertaking carriageway patching works from Soughers Lane to Eddleston Street from Monday 18 August 2014 to Wednesday 20 August 2014. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation at off peak hours.

21. Wigan Road, Ashton

Wigan Council will be undertaking carriageway patching works from Park Lane Church to Landgate Lane from Tuesday 19 August 2014 to Thursday 21 August 2014. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation at off peak hours.

22. Liverpool Road, Platt Bridge

Wigan Council will be undertaking carriageway patching works from Crompton Street to Moss Lane from Wednesday 20 August 2014 to Friday 22 August 2014. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation at off peak hours.

23. Scot Lane, Wigan

A private contractorwill be carrying out work to a sewer connection between Laurel Street and Laithwaite Road from Monday 18 August 2014 to Saturday 30 August 2014.  To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in place.

The diversion route will be Ormskirk Road, Robin Park Road, Montrose Avenue, Scot Lane

24. Spring Road, Orrell

Wigan Council will be carrying out carriageway resurfacing works from its junction with Walthew Lane / Prescott Lane to outside Heinz entrance between Monday 18 August 2014 and Friday 22 August 2014. To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in place during off peak hours.

The diversion route will be Latham Lane, Prescott Lane.

25. Wigan Road, Standish

Wigan Council will be carrying out carriageway resurfacing works from outside No. 385 to Douglas View on Sunday 24 August 2014 and Sunday 31 August 2014. To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in place.

The diversion route will be Wigan Road, Chorley Road, Red Rock Lane, School Lane, Meadow Pit Lane, Riley Lane, Haigh Road, Wigan Road, Whelley, Scholes, School Lane, Riverway, Central Park Way, Wigan Lane, Wigan Road.

26. Preston Road, Standish

A private contractorwill be carrying out work to a sewer connection outside no 285 from Monday 18 August 2014 to Friday 22 August 2014.  To undertake these works temporary traffic signals will be in place.

27. Spring Road, Orrell

Wigan Council will be carrying out carriageway resurfacing works from its junction with Walthew Lane / Prescott Lane to outside Heinz entrance between Monday 18 August 2014 and Friday 22 August 2014. To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in place during off peak hours.

The diversion route will be Latham Lane, Prescott Lane.

28. Gathurst Road, Orrell

Wigan Council will be carrying out carriageway resurfacing works from River Douglas Bridge to outside Hillside between Tuesday 26 August 2014 and Friday 29 August 2014. To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in place during off peak hours.

The diversion route will be:

Gathurst Road, Orrell Road, Ormskirk Road, Ellesmere Road / Ormskirk Road (opposite direction – gyratory), A577 Ormskirk Road, A49 Ormskirk Road, A49 Wallgate / Southgate (opposite direction – gyratory). Queen Street / Caroline Street (opposite direction – gyratory), Chapel Lane, Riverway, Central Park Way, Wigan Lane, Wigan Road, High Street, School Lane, Almond Brook Road, Shevington Lane, Broad O’th Lane, Gathurst Lane, Gathurst Road.

29. Westleigh Lane, Leigh

Electricity North West will carry out works to repair a valve outside house no 332 between Tuesday 12 August 2014 and Friday 29 August 2014. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation.

30. Green Lane, Leigh

United Utilities will carry out works to a damaged manhole opposite house no 6 on Sunday 17 August 2014.  To undertake these works safely a road closure will be in place. A local diversion will be in place.

31. Wigan Road, Leigh

United Utilities will carry out works to renew a service near to the junction with Hilda Street between Monday 18 August 2014 and Friday 22 August 2014. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works.

32. Bryn Road, Ashton

National Grid Gas will be carrying out works to the gas service near 486 Bryn Road from Thursday 21 August 2014 to Tuesday the 26 August 2014. Stop and Go boards will be in operation during off peak periods.

Forthcoming Road Works and Closures

Leigh Road, Atherton

United Utilities will carry out works to renew a service near to the junction with Oak Street between Tuesday 26 August 2014 and Thursday 28 August 2014. Temporary traffic signals will be in operation during these works. 

The Avenue / Hanover Street / Elmridge, Leigh

United Utilities will carry out major works to construct a rising main from Tuesday 26 August 2014. To undertake their works safely road closures will be in operation until the end of November 2014. 

The Avenue: A road closure will be in operation from outside of property number 202 to approximately 50m north of its junction with Elmridge

Hanover Street: A road closure will be in operation from the junction with The Avenue to the junction with Holden Road

Elmridge: A road closure will be in operation from the junction with The Avenue to the Lions Bridge pumping station

Local diversions will be in place

Hall Lane, Hindley

A private contractor willundertake investigative works on the railway bridge on behalf of Network Rail on Sunday 31 August 2014. To undertake their works safely a road closure will be in operation between Railway Street and Whiteside Avenue. 

The diversion route for traffic will be: Ladies Lane, Castle Hill Road, Wigan Road, Church Street, Chorley Road, Dicconson Lane, Bolton Road

Warrington Road, Ashton

Wigan Council will be undertaking carriageway patching works from the junction with Heath Road to the junction with Newlyn Drive from Monday 1 September 2014 to Wednesday 3 September 2014. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation at off peak hours.

Warrington Road, Ashton

Wigan Council will be undertaking carriageway patching works from outside the Bay Horse to Violet Street from Thursday 4 September 2014 to Monday 8 September 2014. To undertake these works safely temporary traffic signals will be in operation at off peak hours.

Wallgate, Wigan

Transport for Greater Manchester will be undertaking works to recut the detector loops to the traffic signals near to the junction with Miry Lane on Sunday 14 September 2014.  To undertake these works safely lane closures will be in operation at off peak hours.

Darlington Street East, Wigan

Transport for Greater Manchester will be undertaking works to recut the detector loops to the traffic signals at the junction with Warrington Lane on Sunday 14 September 2014.  To undertake these works safely lane closures will be in operation at off peak hours.

Central Park Way, Wigan

Transport for Greater Manchester will be undertaking works to recut the detector loops to the traffic signals at the junction with Tesco on Sunday 14 September 2014.  To undertake these works safely lane closures will be in operation at off peak hours.

School Lane, Wigan

Transport for Greater Manchester will be undertaking works to recut the detector loops to the traffic signals at the junction with Crompton Street / Riverway on Sunday 24 August 2014.  To undertake these works safely lane closures will be in operation at off peak hours.
