Wigan’s first 10k road race is launched today with runners urged to take their places on the starting line to help a good cause.
The Wigan 10k run will be held on Sunday 8 September and will start and finish in Wigan town centre - passing a host of landmarks along the route. The event has been organised by local charity Joining Jack with support from Wigan Council and Wigan Leisure & Culture Trust.
Joining Jack was set-up by former Wigan Warriors player Andy Johnson and his wife Alex after their five year old son, Jack, was diagnosed with incurable muscle wasting condition Duchenne Muscular Dystrophy (DMD). And while Joining Jack is organising the event, runners are invited to raise money for a cause of their choice.
Lord Peter Smith, Leader of Wigan Council, says: “The Wigan 10k promises to be a fantastic event, which the council is delighted to support. Not only is it an opportunity for people to raise money for good causes, it will also be a great showcase for Wigan town centre. There will be lots of events before and after the run so even if you don’t feel up to taking part you can still get involved.
“Joining Jack is a local charity, close to the hearts of many people in Wigan Borough. I’m pleased the council is working with them to put on this ambitious event. Hopefully lots of money will be raised and everyone will have a day to remember.”
Jack Johnson’s parents, Andy and Alex, are thrilled to announce the launch of the event. Andy said: “It is less than twelve months since we started Joining Jack and it is unbelievable that in such a short space of time the charity is launching an event of this scale.
“We continue to be amazed and grateful to receive such support for our son and other boys with this incurable condition. It was because of the level of support we have received locally that we wanted to involve other charities in this event. It should be a really great day and we can’t wait to see everyone with us on the starting line.”
Charity trustee and race organiser Matt Johnson said: “We approached the Wigan Council last year with the initial idea and were encouraged by the response received. Since then the support from organisations such as the council, Wigan Leisure & Cultural Trust and Greater Manchester Police has meant that the idea has turned into reality and we are now launching the inaugural Wigan Borough 10k race.
“Wigan is known for its sporting heritage so an event like this is a perfect way for people of all abilities to get involved and maybe even set themselves a challenge. So whether you are a serious runner, enthusiastic amateur, potential volunteer or business looking to get involved please register or get in touch.”
If your running days are behind you, there are other ways to get involved. The race organisers are looking for volunteers to help out on the day and the whole of Wigan Borough is invited to line the route and cheer on the runners.
You can register for the race at www.wigan10k.co.uk. Further information on route, parking facilities, locker and changing facilities and sponsorship forms will be available on this website at a later date. Those interested in volunteering on the day should email email@example.com
