Wigan Council is proposing to increase the admission number of Tyldesley Primary School from 30 to 45 on a permanent basis from September 2011, as part of the Wigan Schools for the Future programme.
Parents will be given the chance to find out more about the proposals to permanently enlarge the school at a drop in session to be held on Wednesday 3rd February 2010 at Tyldesley Primary School between 6pm to 8pm.
Tyldesley Primary School is popular and consistently receives more applications for reception class than there are places available.
Temporary classrooms were placed at the school in 2009 to deal with increased pupil numbers in the area for Reception intake in 2009 and 2010. It is now clear that with birth rates continuing to rise, that this will mean the predicted demand for places across primary schools in the area will continue to outstrip the 242 places currently available.
As part of the plans, £1.5 million will be invested to extend Tyldesley Primary School in order to accommodate an extra 15 pupils per year group. Additional permanent classrooms and teaching spaces will be provided to help meet the needs of the modern curriculum and to give children the chance to learn and achieve in new world-class facilities.
The temporary classrooms will be removed once the building has been permanently extended.
Headteacher, Yvonne Brown said:” This proposal would provide an excellent opportunity for our school to develop further and I hope parents will attend the drop-in session to discuss the positive plans that could be in place for our school community.
Councillor Susan Loudon, Cabinet Champion for Children and Young People said: “Wigan Borough needs to provide additional school places in Tyldesley to meet increased demand for places and ensure a school place for every Wigan child. This is a fantastic chance to find out more about the proposals and I would urge parents to attend.”
Information on the proposals is contained in the consultation document published on 18th January 2010, which was issued to parents and other interested parties. A copy of the consultation document is available on the Wigan Council website.
A period of public consultation is now underway, during which written comments are invited. The closing date for comments is 12 March 2010.
