IT has the power of 2,500 horses or the equivalent pulling muscle of two Formula One cars.
This mighty triple expansion four cylinder engine was once the powerhouse that drove a 26ft flywheel with 54 ropes running hundreds of cotton spinning machinery across all five floors of Trencherfield Mill at Wigan Pier.
Now this masterpiece of engineering will take centre stage as part of Power Fest.
Power Fest, is part of this year’s bigger and better Manchester Science Festival, which runs from Saturday October 23 until Sunday October 31.
In Wigan it will explore the many different types of power – wind, steam, water and even man power but the main attraction will be the mighty Trencherfield Mill steam engine built in 1907.
During the day youngsters will be able to harness the power of the wind by making kites, families can chug along the highways of the industrial age on a narrow boat while dads will be able to put their muscle to the test in a tug-of-war.
Power Fest will take place at Trencherfield Mill on Wednesday October 27 and has been organised by Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust’s Heritage Service.
Bill Rowley, is the Engineering Manager at the mill. He said: “The Trencherfield Mill Engine is one of the largest and finest working engines of its kind in the world. It is a feat of Victorian engineering which typifies their sense of industrial ingenuity and scientific endeavor.”
Wigan Warrior under 20s players Dom Crosby and Jaydon Sandford will be taking part in a tug-of-war on the day.
More than 200 exciting events will take place across Greater Manchester during half term. There will be something for everyone - from bee knitting to chocolate making, stand-up comedy to workshops, talks and demonstrations - and even an awe-inspiring trip into the mysteries of the Universe!
