Residents and friends of Pennington Hall Park in Leigh get behind the bid.

Forget the X-Factor - there’s only one competition that needs your vote now and it’s right here in Leigh.

The Friends of Pennington Hall Park are set to appear on TV to go head-to-head with a Cheshire school to win £54,000 for a new play facility.

A filming crew from ITV’s Granada Reports has already recorded at the park for the People’s Millions project which will be broadcast on Tuesday 25th November on ITV at 6pm.

Chairwoman of Friends of Pennington Hall Park, Gillian Baglee, said:

“This money will ensure we create a new era for this historic park.

“But we can’t do it without help from the people of Leigh and beyond.

“Please pick up the phone and help us ‘Swing the Vote’ and improve the quality of life for young children in this community.”

The number to ring to vote for Pennington Hall Park is 0871 626 8856. (see below for rates)

The park was donated to the town in 1920 by brewer George Shaw. Recognition for the park came earlier this year when along with Alexandra Park in Wigan it was named as the winner of the borough’s first ever Green Flag Award – the national standard for parks and green spaces in England and Wales.

The Friends are hoping the Big Lottery money will create a new generation of park admirers.

Gillian added:

“We want families to come here to stay and play a while so that they become as passionate about this park as we are and help to preserve and improve it for future generations.”

The Big Lottery Fund's People’s Millions project is a UK wide programme whose aim is to fund projects that improve the quality of life of local communities through transforming the local environment, or provide opportunities and facilities for enjoying the local area.

Additional money from Leigh Township Forum could see the project top £90,000, improving facilites for more than 1200 people in the area..
