VISITORS to the Turnpike Gallery will soon be able to discover the wealth of artistic talent that exists in Wigan and Leigh.

The annual Open exhibition starts on Saturday 13 March and is a celebration of the diversity of current artistic practice in the borough.

Each year the Turnpike Gallery invites people living or working in the borough of Wigan, to submit an artwork or hand crafted object to be included in the exhibition.

Last year more than 200 local artists - professionals and amateurs, young and old - took part in the exhibition and the Leigh based gallery is expecting even more this time.

The Open is a popular exhibition with visitors and exhibitors alike, and attracts work in a variety of media from painting, sculpture, video and photography, to ceramics, textiles and jewellery.

It includes traditional and non-traditional, figurative and abstract works, large and small.

Visual Arts Officer for Wigan Leisure and Culture Trust, Martyn Lucas, said: “We endeavour to exhibit all the art works that are brought to the gallery. It’s always a bit of a risky approach, and challenging to install, but it is a real opportunity for amateurs to show alongside professionals, and for people of all ages to have their work on display.

“For some established artists it is a chance for their work to be seen by a new audience; for others it is the first time they have considered putting their art on public display. There really is something for everyone.”

The exhibition opens on Saturday 13 March, 12 to 2pm and everyone is welcome to attend.
