A special reception has been held to toast a remarkable season for one of Wigan Borough’s top amateur sports clubs.
Leigh Miners Rangers were honoured at an event attended by the Mayor of Wigan, Cllr Myra Whiteside, and the Leader of Wigan Council, Lord Peter Smith. The rugby league club has enjoyed spectacular success this season. The first team won the inaugural Conference Challenge Cup final – the first piece of silverware the team has won in seven seasons. Meanwhile, the Miners’ women’s side, which was only established two years ago, won the Plate Play-off final.
The success cements the club’s reputation as one of the best amateur rugby league teams in Wigan Borough. A buffet reception was held in their honour at the Miners’ home ground on Twist Lane in Leigh on the evening of Wednesday 24th October.
Lord Peter Smith, who is honorary vice president of Leigh Miner Rangers, was present when the first team defeated Cumbrian side Egremont Rangers in the final of the Conference Challenge Cup at the Halliwell Jones Stadium in Warrington earlier this month. He says: “I’m delighted by the success of Leigh Miners. Winning the Conference Challenge Cup was a significant achievement for the first team. But what is particularly pleasing is that the club has been successful at every level, with different age groups, and especially the women’s side, having great seasons too.
“Leigh Miners is now one of the biggest voluntary organisations in Wigan Borough and the passion and commitment of all those involved with the club is inspiring. It’s right their achievements this season should be officially recognised.”
