Today, Tuesday 2nd March, Lord Sugar, Government’s Enterprise Champion met five young apprentices from across the Borough when he officially opened the Wigan Skills Shop, Grand Arcade in the Town Centre.

Wigan Council currently employs 39 prospect apprenticeships in place, and is committed to growing this opportunity to 100 young people across the community.

Whilst visiting the Skills Shop Lord Sugar also met four young people whom have gained secure work placements with Wigan Council under the Future Jobs Fund initiative - another exciting opportunity designed to help young people get on the career ladder.

Both initiatives demonstrate the Council’s commitment to helping young people who are struggling to find employment under the current climate, where competition is at is peak.

Councillor David Molyneux, Environment and Regeneration Champion says; “It’s been an honour to welcome Lord Sugar to Wigan and officially open the Skills Shop today. He saw this innovative service complementing other services across the borough and not duplicating.

“Both schemes are a fantastic opportunity for young people to get paid whilst gaining on the job training, and become qualified in their desired field. The initiative opens doors to a wide range of career opportunities at competitive rates. We are able to go one step further for those apprentices on board and offer them the security of a permanent contract upon completion of their apprenticeship and meeting the targets set.”
